(Review) Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks Bring the Hits to Boston

With a combined 75 years of hits between them, there’s no way that a Stevie Nicks/Rod Stewart double bill could possibly disappoint? Well…the two legends of pop/rock took the stage for a show at Boston’s TD Garden and blew my modest expectations away. Both in their sixties, and with two completely different styles of performance, each artist was incredibly entertaining.

My expectations were modest for several reasons. One was Nicks’ well-documented history of drug abuse. Another was Rod Stewart’s recent inclination towards the great American songbook. I didn’t want to see the guy sitting on a stool sitting standards. There was also the fact that the opening date of the barely week-old tour had already been cancelled on account of Stewart having the flu.

(Review) Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks: Hits-packed Night of Crystal Visions and Reasons to Believe

By Sarah Rodman

Rod Stewart’s daughters may love Stevie Nicks and that is why he headed out on tour with her. But it would seem that the enduringly cheeky Brit and the high priestess of Fleetwood Mac overestimated just how much overlap there actually is in their respective audiences outside of his immediate family.

Last night at the TD Garden, there were definite pockets of diehard Stevie-mania in the crowd of 13,000-plus and an overall appreciation for her well-known hits. But from ovations to singalongs to basic energy level it was clearly Stewart’s audience.

"Secret Love" AC & Triple A Chart Update

AC RADIO
In it's 5th week on the AC charts, the latest from Stevie Nicks "Secret Love" is still gaining in radio play week over week showing an increase of 27 plays over the previous week. Other tracks on the chart were played a little more so therefore "Secret Love" remains at # 23 with a bullet. This chart position will be reflected in Billboard Magazine issue date April 9th. With 9 new AC stations picking up the track as of March 28th the single should no doubt see a move up on next weeks chart - provided those 9 stations play the track and none of the existing stations drop the track.

TRIPLE A RADIO
In it's 4th week on the Triple A Chart the single moves back up to # 26 after dipping to # 27 last week even though last week "Secret Love" picked up radio play. This week saw a decrease in radio play on Triple A stations but the decrease was less then others causing "Secret Love" to actually move up one place on the chart. One Triple A station picked up the track on March 28th which shouldn't really do much for it's chart position next week - it'll need a little bit more help from radio at these stations if it's going to go much higher.

(Review) Stewart, Nicks deliver stellar concert - Mohegan Sun Arena

BY STEPHEN PETERSON
Go Magazine
The Sun Chronicle

UNCASVILLE, Conn. - It resembled two shows in one as two stellar rock singer/songwriters joined together.

Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart took the stage Sunday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena, playing lengthy sets of their own material and dueting on a couple of songs as part of their "Heart & Soul Tour." Wednesday they hit the TD Garden in Boston.

Nicks is scheduled to release her first album of new material in a decade, "In Your Dreams," on May 3. Her seventh album, it was co-produced by former Eurythmic David A. Stewart.

The album's first single, "Secret Love," which she wrote decades ago, has been out since February and that was among the first songs in her set.

After "If Anyone Falls in Love," Nicks told the crowd before singing "Dreams" that it probably has been in every Fleetwood Mac show. That No. 1 song is off the phenomenal 1977 Grammy-winning "Rumors" album.

Nicks' mystical "Sorcerer" led to the psychedelic "Gold Dust Woman," also from "Rumors," and which was extended as she did her trademark twirl.

The two drummers soloed to segue into Nicks' "Stand Back," a No. 5 song from 1983 that showcased some impressive bass playing. Stewart did the song in the early '90s.

"Rhiannon," Fleetwood Mac's first hit off the No. 1 and first album with Lindsey Buckingham and Nicks, continued the blend of songs.

The acoustic guitar came out for the sweet "Landslide," also from the above "Fleetwood Mac."

Another of Nicks' big solo hits, "Edge of Seventeen," from her 1982 chart-topping debut album, was also dragged out with some sizzling guitar.

The encore was "Love Is," with just a piano player and backup singers.

Nicks, whose voice was as breath-taking as ever, was also backed up by two women singers, three guitarists and two keyboardists.

Stewart, Nicks make a classic combination
Double bill keeps focus on greatest hits

Boston.com
By Sarah Rodman

Chivalry is not dead in classic rock. Rod Stewart makes a point on his current “Heart and Soul’’ tour with Stevie Nicks, which hits the TD Garden tomorrow night, to introduce the Fleetwood Mac songbird. “It gives things a sense of unity,’’ says the ever rooster-coiffed Brit, who got the idea from his daughters to team up with Nicks for a hits-packed night. We caught up with the 66-year-old new father — he welcomed his eighth child, Aiden, last month— by phone to chat about the raspy rocking double bill, how to get to Carnegie Hall, and a new record with old buddy Jeff Beck.

Q. When you announced the tour, you floated the idea of doing some of her famous duets, but thus far she’s joined you on a couple of your songs.

A. I have to look at the setlist but, apparently, she doesn’t do those duets. But she asked to sing two of my songs [“Passion’’ and “Young Turks’’]. And I said well if that’s what you want to do. One has to give way to the gentler sex. But she makes a very good job of them and it’s a start.

Q. I’m assuming you’re also a fan of her hit “Stand Back’’ since you covered it in the ’90s.

A. Yeah, I would love to sing “Stand Back’’ but she hasn’t asked me yet! You know she suffers from nerves so I don’t want to push her in a direction she doesn’t want to go in . . . When we get ’round to it we’ll add a couple more and hopefully she’ll ask me to sing “Leather and Lace.’’

Not sure if anyone caught this but during Stevie's solo performance she's actually wearing a different type of wedge shoe from what she normally wears if she's not wearing the boots. They are similar to those wedge shoes from previous tours where they are the same thickness all across the sole, but these ones are low in the front and higher in the back.  You can sort of see them in the full shot here where she's singing with the mic.  I noticed them in the Edge of Seventeen Video from Tampa... Thought they looked different.

(Review) Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks Unite At Magical NYC Tour Stop - UsMagazine.com

By Ian Drew for UsMagazine.com.

"This is going to be a very, very unique evening," Rod Stewart said while introducing his old pal Stevie Nicks at the March 26 NYC stop of their joint Heart and Soul Tour. And that it was, in almost all the right ways. Both offered up hits-heavy sets, leaving very few crowd pleasers off the setlist, and sparking non-stop cheers from the sold-out masses inside Madison Square Garden.

(Review) Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks are naturals for a double bill

Stewart, Nicks in Nostalgia Showcase
By THOMAS KINTNER, Special to The Courant
The Hartford Courant

With decades-old heydays and sandpaper vocal signatures in common, Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks are naturals for a double bill. In practice Sunday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, the pairing was a nostalgia showcase, spun by each artist in a notably different way.

Headliner Stewart fostered a party atmosphere with a strong whiff of camp around its edges, reveling in the role of '60s-style lounge denizen as he paraded forth in a shiny orange dinner jacket, shiny black shoes and spiky peroxide-altered hair. He has extended his recording career with middle-of-the-road soul interpretations of familiar favorites and the American Songbook, and kicked off his show with a lively push through someone else's hit, grappling gamely with the chugging "Love Train."

Nicks featured recent material alongside stalwart hits, with the throbbing "Secret Love" and powerful "If Anyone Falls." Her singing retains its singular nasal quality, but has little flex or finesse leaving its high end sharp but not particularly expressive in the Fleetwood Mac hit "Dreams."

Rod Stewart outshines Stevie Nicks with potent performance at Mohegan Sun
By Kevin O'Hare, The Republican

UNCASVILLE, CONN. – There have been some intriguing pairings of stars to try and light up box offices during the economic downturn, and you can add the double bill of Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks to the list.

The two veteran singers brought their “Heart & Soul” tour to a full house at the Mohegan Sun Arena Sunday for a nostalgia-filled night courtesy of two of the most distinctive vocalists of their era.

Both in their 60s, the pair focused on familiar, crowd friendly-fare during their individual sets and surprisingly did only a couple of songs together during the entire show.

However, one thing was certain when all was said and done: Stewart was the headliner and it’s a good thing that he was. His electrifying stage presence and high-energy performance made Nicks’ hour-and-20-minute opening set seem pretty pale in comparison.

The Fleetwood Mac songstress fronted a seven-piece band and was accompanied by two female backing singers as she moved through songs such as “Dreams,” “If Anyone Falls,” and the harder edge of “Gold Dust Woman,” while the pulsating “Secret Love,” a new song from her forthcoming album “In Your Dreams” was well received by the crowd.

The mystical enchanter from the 1970s and ‘80s surfaced occasionally as Nicks drew shrieks from the audience when she started spinning with her shawl wrapped around her in “Stand Back,” while classics like “Rhiannon,” and the touching take of “Landslide” (the latter complete with a video backdrop showing plenty of images of the singer with her father) brought the set to an emotional peak.

Unfortunately, “Edge of Seventeen” was long and rather anticlimactic while the encore ballad “Love Is,” was positively deflating.

Spare the Rod and spoil the show?

Not on a Saturday night at the first of two Rod Stewart performances, where the rock icon was generous with a greatest-hits set featuring the songs that have helped him sell out Madison Square Garden a whopping 42 times.

Add to that concert-craft tricks for show momentum like inviting opening act Stevie Nicks (who looks great and has a new record dropping May 3) to join him for a mini duet set.

Concert review: Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks take us back to the 1970’s at the St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa (with photos)

Creative Loafing

In the recent tradition of impressive package tours that have been making their way around the globe, a double-billing with plenty of star power — the Rod Stewart/Stevie Nicks “Heart & Soul” tour — kicked off at the St. Pete Times Forum in downtown Tampa on Wednesday night and gave all those in attendance more than their money’s worth. [All photos by Tracy May.]

In every right a headliner herself, Stevie Nicks, former frontwoman of the mega-successful Fleetwood Mac, took the stage first. Clad in all black, Nicks seemed joyous and eager to perform. It’s been a while since Stevie has concentrated on her very successful solo career; she’s spent more time focusing on Mac-related reunion projects and recordings. But Wednesday night it was all about Stevie doing what she does best as part of a supergroup or alone — captivating a rapt audience with her charm and positive aura.

Stevie Nicks: The men, the music, the menopause

          She talks to Craig McLean
The Guardian UK (week end magazine March 26, 2011)

Stevie Nicks, legendary singer-songwriter and hard-living Fleetwood Mac frontwoman, is considering her greatest regret. It is not her "huge cocaine period", the 10 years that elapsed between the making of Fleetwood Mac's 40m-selling 1977 album Rumours and the moment, in 1986, when she finally entered the Betty Ford Center. Nor is it her complicated history with band members: she joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974 with guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, subsequently detailing their split in the hit song Dreams, and went on to have an affair with drummer Mick Fleetwood, which inspired the 1983 solo song Beauty And The Beast.

It is not even the eight years she lost to Klonopin, a prescription tranquilliser to which she became addicted in the late 80s and early 90s, when she was "just a sad girl, sitting in a big, beautiful house, going, 'What the f- hell happened?'"

The regret that has really stayed with her is her marriage, in 1983, to Kim Anderson, widower of her best friend Robin Snyder. Snyder's baby Matthew had been born two days before she died of leukaemia. Three months later, Nicks and Anderson were married.

"It was insanity," the 62-year-old says now. "Everybody was furious. It was a completely ridiculous thing. And it was just because I had this crazy, insane thought that Robin would want me to take care of Matthew. But the fact is, Robin would not have wanted me to be married to a guy I didn't love. And therefore accidentally break that guy's heart, too."

Nicks, now a multimillionaire, may have remarkable recall for details and dates from her four decades in music, but she also betrays the hallmarks of 70s cosmic thinking. She describes how she became aware of Snyder's displeasure: "One day when I walked into Matthew's room, the cradle was not rocking," she says. "I know that sounds crazy, but it was always rocking whenever I'd walk in, and I knew Robin was there. And one day it wasn't rocking and it was very dark and the baby was very quiet. And I said, 'Robin wants this to end – now.' I felt it as strongly as if she'd put her hand on my shoulder."

So it was a sign from beyond the grave?

          "It was absolutely a sign."

Nicks had visited Snyder during her cancer treatment. "I was so high on coke. I'd drink half a bottle of brandy on the way there, 'cause I couldn't stand it. She was so sick. And she said to me, 'Don't come back until you're not high – don't come back into this place where everybody is dying.'"

Nicks shrugs. "So that was the Robin who would have said [of the marriage], 'You've lost your mind. What were you thinking?'"

Nicks and Anderson divorced after three months.

Stevie Nicks is holding court in a hotel suite with spectacular views of the ocean off Miami, as her tiny terrier, Sulamith, yaps about in a blue sweater. She is here for the Heart & Soul tour, a month-long series of concerts with Rod Stewart. The tour, billed as "Two legends – one stage", starts three days from now, but Nicks and Stewart have yet to rehearse together.

NICKS AND STEWART REVIEW - ATLANTA... Venerable duo dazzled during their respective sets

Stewart and Nicks a perfect pair — apart
          by Melissa Ruggieri
          AJC.COM

It turns out that the interesting-yet-odd pairing of Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart is more odd than interesting.

          Separately, they’re terrific.

          Together? Meh.

At Thursday night’s Philips Arena show – only the second date of the “Heart and Soul” tour after the kickoff in Fort Lauderdale was scotched Sunday due to Stewart “having the flu” – the venerable duo dazzled during their respective sets.

At 7:28 p.m., Stewart waltzed out on stage in his best boat captain getup to introduce “one of the truly great, iconic voices of rock ‘n’ roll…and I’m not talking about myself.”

Unfortunately for Nicks, whom he was talking about, the arena was about half-filled at that point, with many fans likely assuming that a 7:30 ticket meant an 8 p.m. or later start. When was the last time you attended a rock concert that started on time?

But Nicks, in her trademark layers of black ruffles and sequins, was undeterred as she barreled through a muddy “Fall From Grace” and a much cleaner-sounding “Secret Love,” the dreamy new single from her upcoming May release.
