Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams' Week 4...

Stevie Nicks Earning Praise for New Solo Album 'In Your Dreams'

Many critics and fans are calling Stevie Nicks’ new album the best of her solo career.

VOANews.com

Listen: Morningstar report on Stevie Nicks' "In Your Dreams" MP3

The title track of Stevie Nicks’ new album, In Your Dreams, is one of seven songs she wrote with the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, who also co-produced the collection. The pair spent the past year recording the album at Stevie’s California home. Other collaborators include Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s band The Heartbreakers, Stevie’s former bandmate Lindsey Buckingham, and Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood. Stevie refers to the making of “In Your Dreams” as the highlight of her entire career.

“I can honestly tell you, the very best year of my life," Stevie says. "It shuts down anything else that has ever happened to me. It was so much fun and so grand and so soul-fulfilling that when it was over and we started taking the studio down in December and all the people that had lived in the house that year started taking their stuff, it was horrifying. I almost just sat on the stairs and cried because I was so sad that it was over.”

The song “Annabel Lee”, found on Stevie's new album, is an adaptation of an 1849 poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. Other songs on In Your Dreams were inspired by personal events in Stevie’s life. Two date back to poems the singer wrote in the mid-1970s.

In 2004, Stevie began visiting wounded military personnel at Washington, D.C.’s Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Bethesda Naval Hospital. She helps lift their spirits by giving each soldier a portable media player filled with her favorite music. Included on her new album is a song called “Soldier’s Angel,” which holds special meaning to her and those she has met in the hospitals.

“It was a poem that was written in 2005 and since I have given this poem out to many many families, many many soldiers. And, I always told them, ‘This will be a song one day.’ So, I think this is my most revered song of all time,” she explains.

Stevie recently wrapped up a co-headlining tour with rock legend Rod Stewart. She hints that her future plans include the possibility of a new Fleetwood Mac album and tour that could happen as early as 2012.

DISC REVIEW: Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams' "the disc has a handful of top-rank Nicks tracks, including the mourning observations on New Orleans"

Stevie Nicks - In Your Dreams (Warner)
BY JASON KELLER
NOW RATING N N N N N
Now Magazine Toronto

Upon hearing that the great black magic enchantress Steve Nicks has written a song inspired by milquetoast teen vampire franchise Twilight, you had to figure her new disc, In Your Dreams, didn’t stand a chance. Why would an OG (original goth) like Nicks take her cues from something so toothless?

It turns out the track in question, Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream), plods along at times but isn’t nearly as offensive as it might have been. In fact, you could say the same about all of the surprising In Your Dreams, which, despite being overlong at an hour-plus, might be Nicks’s best record since The Wild Heart.

Co-written with long-time songwriting partner (and former Eurhythmics main main) David Stewart and co-produced by Glen Ballard (of Alanis fame), the disc has a handful of top-rank Nicks tracks, including the mourning observations on New Orleans, an intimate tune called For What It’s Worth and Secret Love, a propulsive track she penned during the Mac’s mid-70s heyday. Lindsey Buckingham appears on the quiet Soldier’s Angel, and he and Nicks interlock in a unique way that tells us these two, at least musically, are bound together for life.

(Review) Still magical: Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams' Grade 'A' (Ireland)

Stevie Nicks: In Your Dreams
(Reprise CD, 64:47).

I think a 10-year wait between albums is a bit long, especially when you have material as strong as Nicks presents here. In fact, the first single and opening track, “Secret Love,” was written in 1976, when Fleetwood Mac was opening for Peter Frampton at the time. It is about a forbidden relationship, but not one with Frampton, Nicks said.

Nicks’ last album of new material was the Grammy-nominated “Trouble in Shangi-La” 10 years ago. It was written and recorded at her Los Angeles home and is co-produced by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, Nicks and Stewart (ex-Eurythmics with Annie Lennox) co-wrote seven of the 13 songs. Former bandmate Lindsey Buckingham sings and plays guitar on “Soldier’s Angel,” a highlight track that easily could have fit on Fleetwood Mac’s smash “Rumours” album. Mick Fleetwood himself contributes drums to the album. However, the core group that made the album was Nicks, Stewart, her longtime friend and musical director Waddy Wachtel and her girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks.

Among the strong album’s many highlights are the travelogue “New Orleans”; “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream),” inspired by the “Twilight” series; the orchestrated seduction of “Italian Dreams”; the rocker “Ghosts Are Gone”; and “Annabel Lee,” a 6-plus-minute delight inspired by the 1849 Edgar Allan Poe piece and a meditation on love and death. In one song, she sings, “I’m just a dreamer; I’m just a storyteller,” while in another the 63-year-old singer (her birthday was Thursday) admits her desire to “wear feathers and lace.” Grade: A

STEVIE NICKS, ‘SOLDIER’S ANGEL’ – SONG REVIEW by @UltClassicRock:

Stevie Nicks has a special message for our armed forces in the form of her new single ‘Soldier’s Angel,’ which appears on her current ‘In Your Dreams’ album and has just been released on the edge of Memorial Day Weekend.

Nicks found inspiration for the song from her many visits with returning veterans at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital, writing the track as way to honor those men and women who have served our country.

“I am a soldier’s angel / Through the eyes of a soldier / Through the eyes of a soldier / I am a soldier’s mother / Through the eyes of an angel / I am a soldier myself / And no one walks away from this battle.” Against the backdrop of a singular electric guitar, an unvarnished vocal from Nicks, naked and void of any polish or effect, considers the unique position of each person and how they’re affected by the effects of war and the absence of their loved ones.

Stevie Nicks Jams Classics and New Material in Two-Hour L.A. Show
Former Fleetwood Mac frontwoman joined onstage by Lindsey Buckingham, Dave Stewart
By MIKAEL WOOD
MAY 27, 2011
Rollingstone Magazine

Last night at the Wiltern in Los Angeles Stevie Nicks performed at a star-studded concert in celebration of In Your Dreams, her first solo album in a decade. But yesterday the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman also turned 63, and a table full of miniature cupcakes greeted showgoers entering the historic venue, which Nicks said the Mac used for rehearsals back in 1975.

It wasn't the only reminder that this still-potent style icon has been a rock star for longer than Lady Gaga has been alive: Nicks treated Thursday's two-hour show like an in-person episode of VH1's Storytellers, explaining how new tunes such as "Annabel Lee" and "For What It's Worth" connect to classics like "Dreams." "It's all one big thread," she said, a point driven home when Lindsey Buckingham arrived onstage to help her play "Soldier's Angel," a haunting In Your Dreams cut inspired by a trip Nicks took to the Army's Walter Reed Medical Center. (Mick Fleetwood made the scene last night, though he didn't perform.)

Stevie Nicks Shares Songwriting Stories at Star-Studded L.A. Show
Billboard Magazine
by Phil Gallo

At a packed Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday (May 26) where the audience included Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Reese Witherspoon and Andy Garcia, Stevie Nicks took advantage of a rare night in which musicians who worked on her first album in a decade, "In Your Dreams," were on hand to make cameo appearances. Nicks, who was celebrating her 63rd birthday, told the audience at the top of the show that she would be telling songwriting tales, even if it meant the show would last three hours and they would beg her to hush up and sing.

It didn't last that long -- she put in a nice two hours, 10 minutes -- but she did have a good number of stories, some whimsical, some historical and none more poignant than the one behind "Soldier's Angel."

One day in 2005, Nicks spent seven hours visiting wounded soldiers at a hospital and, on her way out, an emergency crew rushed in another set of the wounded. "I went in a girl and came out a changed woman," she told the audience.

The experience inspired her to write a poem that she had printed and handed out to soldiers for four years. In November of 2009, she was in London when seven British soldiers were killed in Iraq and media response in London was overwhelming; she wrote a four-page rant in her journal and eventually spent close to a year trying to turn the poem into a song. It never came to fruition.

"I have to call Lindsey," she said, which led them to completing "Soldier's Angel." Buckingham joined Nicks for an acoustic rendering of the tune, with the occasional roll of drums, that became the emotional high point of the show.

"Soldier's Angel" was one of eight songs from the new album performed, each of them explained in detail. "Annabel Lee," written when Nicks was 17, was inspired by an Edgar Alan Poe poem; "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream)" shares a through line with "Lady From the Mountain"; "For What It's Worth" was written about her summer riding the bus across the U.S. with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. (Heartbreaker guitarist Mike Campbell joined the band for the tune). Nicks called it "the best summer of my life-and you can interpret that any way you like."

"Secret Love," one of several songs to feature Stewart as guest guitarist, was written in 1975, recorded on a cassette and eventually bootlegged many times over. The country-tinged duet "Cheaper Than Free" sprang from a comment Witherspoon made to Nicks and Stewart - she was offering her Nashville condo to Stewart for a couple of weeks, making it "cheaper than free."

Her six-piece band led by Waddy Wachtel and two background singers backed Nicks, who got her bearings straight after a rocky opening half-hour. At the opening of the show, she explained the importance of the Wiltern in her career: In early 1975, it was the venue where she and Buckingham first rehearsed with the other members of Fleetwood Mac - Christine McVie, John McVie and Fleetwood - having joined the band on New Year's Eve 1974.

Stevie Nicks in control of 'Dreams'

Nicks said she was anxious about the prospect of unveiling her new songs to an audience for the first time.
By Amy Kaufman - Los Angeles Times
The Republic

LOS ANGELES — Stevie Nicks was sauntering around a cavernous sound stage on the Sony lot in Culver City as her tiny dog, Sulamith, who was outfitted in a sweater, trailed behind her. It was Tuesday, only a few days before her Thursday concert at the Wiltern, which will celebrate the release of her first solo album in more than a decade, "In My Dreams," as well as her 63rd birthday. But it was dusty in the rehearsal space. And that upset her.

"This is a massive old place, and for me, it's hard, because it's very, very dusty, and I'm allergic to dust," she said, opting to sit in a stiff office chair instead of on a couch for fear that it would incite her allergies. "When I'm in here for eight hours, I get a bad feeling. It makes me feel like I'm flipping out."

Nicks doesn't like feeling out of control. That's why, for years, she has refused to write music with anyone. Even as a part of Fleetwood Mac — the seminal '70s British-American rock band that generated such hits as "Landslide," "Gold Dust Woman" and "Gypsy" — Nicks rarely sat down and collaborated with her fellow band members.

"I would write a song, put it on a cassette, and put it by the coffee pot for Lindsey (Buckingham) and say, 'Here's the song. You can produce it, but don't change it. Don't come back to me and say you want to change the words or the melody.' I didn't have a very good attitude," she acknowledged.

Stars talk about Oprah Winfrey [Stevie Nicks]

"I think that Oprah's legacy is that she has made a difference and that's what we as women want to do. We want to make a difference in this world and she's made a difference in a lot of ways. She's made a difference in really fun things and she's made a difference in really serious things and she's told us stories that ... I'd never heard -- the word abuse. ... I wouldn't even know what that was. She's made a difference so for me that's why I respect her. ... She will be remembered long after she's gone." -- Stevie Nicks,

Rumours fly for Fleetwood Mac, 34 years on.

This is not a rumour: Fleetwood Mac is back
The Australian - May 24th

SYDNEY: Legendary rockers Fleetwood Mac have made a shock return to the Australian music charts, with their highest-selling record Rumours re-emerging at number two on the albums chart, 34 years after its original release.

The surprise comeback follows the Australian premiere of a Fleetwood Macinspired episode of the musical drama Glee, which aired on Network Ten last Wednesday night.

The Grammy Awardwinning album has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide since its release in 1977, and has been certified thirteen-times platinum in Australia.

It is the first time in more than a year the album has featured on the ARIA charts.
But one of the group’s singers Stevie Nicks has not seen as much success with her solo album In Your Dreams, which hangs back at number 32, a week after its debut.

Fleetwood Mac gleefully push straight to the top
The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) - May 24th

FLEETWOOD Mac’s Rumours album was propelled back into the Australian top 10 this week some 34 years after its release, thanks to the Glee effect.

Thousands of digital copies of the record were downloaded as an episode which featured songs from the 1977 record aired on Wednesday.

"People were buying it even before the episode aired thanks to the promos which featured one of the lead characters singing Go Your Own Way," a chart analyst said. The cover of that song entered the ARIA singles chart at No. 32. But the original Rumours album, featuring Stevie Nicks, came in at No. 2, almost knocking Adele’s 21 off the top spot.

Forget the tales of cocaine binges and Klonopin addiction. Forget the stale tales of rock ‘n’ roll excess and debauchery. Hard as it might be, also forget the played-out stories of high profile love affairs and even higher profile break-ups. Beyond the myths and legends, Stevie Nicks’ songs are a modern-day portal into the aching and longing heart. Stevie wrings melodies out of emotions and memories that might otherwise be hard to explain.

After her 2001 album Trouble In Shangri-la, Stevie Nicks stated that she would not do another solo album. For fans like me the impact of this statement went far beyond a mere lack of new music. When Stevie Nicks released a new album it always miraculously defined my life at the time. A world without new Stevie Nicks’ music was my future without a constant and accurate voice. In the last ten years, I’ve continued to grow and relate to fewer and fewer of Stevie’s songs, as much as I loved them at the time they debuted.

When Stevie Nicks announced last year she was indeed working on a new solo album with Dave Stewart, I was immediately elated. There would be new music for new times in my life by one of the few people who always seemed to hit the nail on the head, even though she’s never met me.

(Review) Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams'

"Stevie Nicks brings her A game to In Your Dreams, her first studio album in ten years and one that, depending on your point of view, either establishes her as one of rock and roll's elder statespeople or cements the fact once and for all."

Awesome review!

[Chart Updates] Fleetwood Mac's Rumours Album Explodes on the Album Charts in the UK and Australia + Stevie Nicks

AUSTRALIA: Album Charts May 23, 2011
Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" explodes in Australia re-entering the Top 50 Albums Chart at No. 2 right behind Adele - thanks to the Glee episode featuring songs from the album. The re-entry on the main Albums chart is a little odd given that it's a catalogue title.  Something changed somewhere to allow it to show up on the main Albums Chart.  Had it been able to chart in the last two weeks on this chart it would have been No. 58, then No. 65 last week.  The album also moves up from No.7 last week to No. 2 on the Top 50 catalogue chart and enters the Top 50 Digital Albums Chart at No.2. "The Very Best Of" drops one position this week to No. 5 from No. 4 last week.

Rumours fly for Fleetwood Mac, 34 years on.
TheAge.au

Legendary rockers Fleetwood Mac have made a shock return to the Australian music charts, with their highest-selling record Rumours re-emerging at number two on the albums chart, 34 years after its original release.

The surprise comeback follows the Australian premiere of a Fleetwood Mac-inspired episode of the musical drama Glee, which aired on Network Ten last Wednesday night.

The Grammy Award-winning album has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide since its release in 1977, and has been certified thirteen-times platinum in Australia.

It is the first time in more than a year the album has featured on the ARIA charts.

But the group's lead singer, Stevie Nicks, has not seen as much success with her solo album In Your Dreams, which hangs back at number 32, a week after its debut.

Either way, Fleetwood Mac's new-found popularity was not strong enough to push UK songstress Adele from the top spot.

Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" piece in today's LA Times

“Rumours”
Fleetwood Mac
(Warner Bros.)
Los Angeles Times May 22, 2011 (Pop Music Section E12)
— Randall Roberts

For anyone over 35, the hardest part of listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” is actually hearing the music within, absorbing it without all the accumulated history: that it was the soundtrack to a generation that included backseat lovers, pot smokers, cocaine snorters and countless lost souls looking for broken-hearted comfort. That when that first generation of listeners kicked their habits, had children and became productive members of society, they shuttled their kids to the grocery store with “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow,” and “Go Your Own Way” playing in perpetual loop on the FM radio, thus inculcating the next generation into the cult of “Rumours.”

These followers are now having kids of their own, who are experiencing the music in new ways — such as watching its songs performed on “Glee,” which featured “Rumours” during a recent show, resulting in the album landing in the iTunes top five album chart — 35 years after its release.

Recorded mostly in Sausalito, Calif., the album was born as members Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were breaking up while struggling with addictions, bassist John McVie and pianist-vocalist Christine McVie were divorcing, and drummer Mick Fleetwood and his wife were splitting up as well. How did they handle it? As Chris Stone, one of the recording studio’s owners, told Billboard in 1997: “The band would come in at 7 at night, have a big feast, party till 1 or 2 in the morning, and then when they were so whacked-out they couldn’t do anything, they’d start recording.”

Despite their mind frames, the songs the five created were about all those troubles. What the members couldn’t or wouldn’t say over dinner they tackled through song. “Loving you, isn’t the right thing to do,” sings Buckingham on “Go Your Own Way.” Two songs later Nicks responds in “The Chain.” “Damn your love, damn your lies.” On it goes throughout, with heavy Mick Fleetwood rhythms and propellent melodies flowing into Christine McVie’s piano weepers and Nicks’ perfectly sandy voice. No wonder “Rumours” endures.

(Review) Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams' ★★★ 1/2 (out of 5) proves the front woman of Fleetwood Mac still has plenty of notes in her singing

Stevie Nicks - In Your Dreams

★★★ 1/2 Stars (out of 5)

Translated from Dutch

Ten years after her last solo album Trouble In Shangri-La is back with Stevie Nicks In Your Dreams . The album was produced by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, among others, Michael Jackson and Annie Lennox), and proves that the nearly 63-year-old frontwoman of Fleetwood Mac is still plenty of notes on her singing to be able to convince.

In Your Dreams kicks off with the new single Secret Love , a new adaptation of a demo / outtake they already recorded in 1976. It's a nice opener that immediately shows us that her unique voice none of their power and finesse has lost and the ravages of time gloriously has endured. For What It ' s Worth has a simple, catchy melody and gives its beauty after a few spins price. The first three seconds of the title song In Your Dreams you think the intro of the hit TV series Friends to recognize but soon turns into a solid uptempo track that reminds of the latest albums by Fleetwood Mac.

The following five tracks is the musical heart of the album and know the level of the album to a higher level. Starting with the dark and menacing sounding Wide Sargasso Sea , by its tension remains intriguing. New Orleans is a beautiful tribute and back support to this by a natural disaster stricken city and its inhabitants and Moonlight (A Vampire ' s Dream) is a fine, well-constructed song with great eloquence. Annabel Lee , inspired by the same name and last poem by American author Edgar Allen Poe, even among the best songs from the solo repertoire of Stevie Nicks, it's perfectly together and convincing from the first second to the powerful final chord. Soldier ' s Angel finally did not initially rafts in the recordings with Dave Stewart. Because Stevie still love this song on the album, she wanted the assistance of none other than Lindsey Buckingham, who built it quite a minimalist number clearly a further move in the right direction gives.

After this beautiful song drops the plate unfortunately do something. Everybody Loves You and You May Be The One of a significantly lower level, Italian Summer gets from the beautiful string arrangement and the summer sensation that evokes the benefit of the doubt and the final track Cheaper Than Free , a duet with producer Dave Stewart (the number will also be on his new solo album, The Blackbird Diaries come to it), sounds even totally unnecessary. With lyrics like "What's Faster Than a fast car, a beating heart" and "what's cheaper Than free, you and me, I'm sure that Stevie and Dave together on creative and supportive level that have, unfortunately, this provides a completely stress-free number on. The solid rocker Ghosts Are Gone , with powerful guitar work and an early end, however, is again excellent.

In summary, In Your Dreams a fairly successful new album by Stevie Nicks, which is eagerly looking forward to a new Fleetwood Mac album, reportedly in 2012. First comes in September, the new solo album from Lindsey Buckingham. We wait with baited breath!
