A clear sign that the 2nd single from the Stevie Nicks album 'In Your Dreams' has been issued to radio is the 4 ebay auctions currently running selling the 2 track promo discs. These promo only discs are issued to radio stations and DJ's for consideration on their playlists... 'For What It's Worth' hopefully will start receiving some airplay across the USA. The 4 listings on ebay all include the album cut at 4:31 and an edit at 4:03, which shaves off 28 seconds from the album version. I'm curious as to what they shaved off. Possibly sacrificed is a large chunk of the intro where up to the point of the bell ringing is about 18 seconds.
I really hope radio gives this great track a chance!... It's right up there along the lines of Landslide as far as I'm concerned...A timeless piece of music.
What the **** is the person snorting who picked "For What It's Worth" as a single? That song SUCKS!
ReplyDeletemy favorite song on the album.
ReplyDeleteAlso a favorite of mine on the album
ReplyDeletePerhaps if Warner Bros. has the sense to release a video and have Stevie perform the song on TV shows at the same time the song went to radio DJ's, it might actually get played and then picked up by radio stations. But as we all know by now, her record company and management are all way too stupid to plan this out in advance. So don't count on actually ever hearing the song on the radio. And Stevie could really have used a hit, both to sell the CD and her short tour; which is not selling well either.
ReplyDeleteTerrible choice for a second single. She hasn't released a single yet that does the album justice. In Your Dreams is sooo obvious and yet, they won't release it. Moonlight, Italian Summer, You May Be the One are also obvious. The singles she are releasing are ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI agree, all the songs are amazing, but even Stevie admits that Moonlight is her favorite. That song is so addictive, I've listened to it over and over, In Your Dreams would be good too. This will not help sales at all. Bizarre.
ReplyDeleteI think "For What It's Worth" IS the obvious single. It could be the summer's "Jar Of Hearts". Maybe they could have possibly B-sided "Moonlight" or "In Your Dreams". And let radio decide. But you know if they shortened this one, can you imagine the butcher job they would do with "Moonlight"? Tim
ReplyDeleteTerrible choice of a single. This is a great album cut but not a strong contender for radio. "Moonlight" would have been a better choice, as would "In your dreams." It is really weird how much creativity Stevie put into this album, yet all the poorly mad marketing decisions were made. Videos released at the last minute, no spots on Letterman, Conan or Leno. No make up dates for her canceled morning show spots. Just mistake upon mistakes. Especially weird since everybody knew with the internet stealing sales with illegal downloading, no extra effort is being made. "For what it's worth" will appeal to a very small niche of the adult contemporary markey, just as "Secret love" did. Strange marketing for a rock and roll legend.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I tell somebody Stevie Nicks has a new album out, they say they had no idea. This is her best album in years, and nobody knows. Selling worse than "Street Angel." makes me sad sad sad.
ReplyDeletei'm in the minority, but I think Moonlight is one of the blandest/ most boring songs she's ever recorded. It starts out nowhere and goes nowhere. The writing is cliche and obvious.
ReplyDeleteFor What It's Worth reminds me of a great Jimmy Webb song - I think it's one of her best. On par with anything on Bella Donna
I think an amazing, rocked out video for "Wide Sargasso Sea", in the tone of the "I Can't Wait" video...with her dancing (around in a circle) and playing the tambourine...close ups on "you'll never forget that...kiss" showing her red lips...would BLOW off the charts!!!! Don't rock a little...rock a LOT!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo, In your Dreams would've been the obvious choice. For what it's worth is great, but not on par with Landslide. Let's not forget video is different today. MTV and VH1 are hardly music video friendly - especially for Stevie who is not as young as she once was. Just the obvious sad truth. This album was for the fans and if anyone else besides that loves it (like the kids who watch Glee), that's great.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't forget the Documentary is coming out soon. BTW, Stevie never did like the close-up of the red lips.
The passion we feel for her is amazing, and the diversity among her fans is too. Quite an opinionated thread going here which is a testament to both the passion and diversity.
ReplyDeleteI always thought this cd was actually 2 CDs in 1. Ethereal , mystical, poetic-- Moonlight, Annabel Lee, Wide Sarfasso Sea. New Orleans, and the heart on your sleeve, straight forward rock, folk and blues--For what it's Worth, In Your Dreams, You May Be The One, Soldiers Angel.ect...I love it all as do a lot of fans. But there are fans who like only one side or the other, and that's cool too.
I love For What It's Worth and a solid choice for a/c format. Hell, go country too. What's the worst that can happen? Hopefully it will crossover to other formats. And a video and tv appearances are crucial. She typically does them as she is touring, which means NY based tv appearances might be late August or Early September...too late I fear unless she does some LA based shows before the tour.
Moonllight will almost certainly be 3rd single, and Annabel Lee the 4th. Hell, it could go deeper than 4 if they play it right. Optomistic, I know. But I am a dreamer.
Umm, folks, radio does not play music from her age bracket. Plain and simple. The core of her audience does not run out and buy records anymore. Plain and simple. She is past her prime as far as sales and being the "it" girl. Lousy as it may be (IYD is a very fine CD), it never had a chance to make her a "star" again. We should all be thankful that the music was well reviewed, and a Grammy nomination I think will probably be the topper.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how delusional most of you are.
ReplyDelete1) Radio will never pick up any of these songs. Name the last person over 50 that got radio airplay in the past 10 years on rock radio.
2) Stevie is most known now for Landslide. That makes this single the best choice.
3) The ~atmospheric~ songs are TERRIBLE choices for singles. Look at Planets of the Universe. Simple gets attention. Simple sells.
Go vote for "For What It's Worth" to be played on 99.3 WAJK an Illinois station, it's up against Kate Deluna.

Bonnie Raitt and Tina Turner are just 2 examples of rock women who had killer albums and comebacks while in Stevies age bracket.
ReplyDeleteSimple does sell, but according to that logic, Edge of 17 never would gave been released or I Can't Wait or Rooms on Fire or, or, or...lots if her releases are layered, intricate and big hits. Has Anyone Ever....one of my favorite of her "simple" songs bombed.
I wouldn't rate it anywhere near Landslide, which isn't as good as Silver Springs (that so should have been a single!)I agree that In your dreams would have been the obvious choice to get your casual music buyer interested, it's the catchiest thing she's done since Rooms on fire.
ReplyDeleteAt least release the new video for "What it's worth" om youtube NOW!
ReplyDeleteWe've a new album to enjoy...she's happy with it. It's for us; can't we just enjoy her music?
ReplyDeleteNo station, especially in a monitored major market, is going to play a five minute song. You go too far past the 4 minute mark and radio programmers balk for various reasons. So you have 5 options: Secret Love, For What It's Worth, In Your Dreams, Italian Summer, Cheaper Than Free. The last two are out. Neither would be strong enough to get radio play. I think the remaining three will be the singles from this album (assuming they get to the third).
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I figure the intro is cut and one of the end "for what it's worth" is taken out or possibly an early fade out gets it to the 4:04.
Isn't this fun! At least we care enough to throw our two cents in. See...She is still relevant. Now get on the phone to your radio stations and request "For What It's Worth" Stranger things have happened
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter what single is picked, I will back it up.
ReplyDeleteBUT "For What It's Worth", for me, is personal. It's like we had a chat & I told her about a time in my life & she wrote a song about it. Line for line, this song is me.
Lyrically, it's classic Stevie. It's the kind of song that makes people want to sing-a-long, a la "Landslide".
However, I don't think any of these songs will get serious air play because of the simple fact that she's over 40. Fact.
Face it, "rock is dead!" IYD will never gain Stevie new fans. IYD is for herself, and her loyal fan base. Ms. Nicks Mgt. knows how to keep her sober, but not a clue on how to "break a record." Thinking priorities are in order, grin!
ReplyDeleteTony - Tina Turner was 45 when she had her big comeback and Bonnie Raitt was 40. The closest comparison to Stevie's current age would be Cher, whose big comeback happened when she was 52. Which is still eleven years younger than Stevie and makes a world of difference in the music business.
ReplyDeleteWow, they sure seemed older...a testament to Stevies timeless beauty I guess.
