25 Great Albums from the new Millennium: Stevie Nicks "In Your Dreams" ranks right there near the top

Stevie Nicks – In Your Dreams (2011)
Rock icon Stevie Nicks has put out some great solo records, but In Your Dreams ranks right there near the top. She collaborates with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, which proves to be a shrewd choice. Stewart is a master in the studio as well as an ace guitarist and songwriter, and one of the best producers in the business. Like Nicks, Stewart works best with a strong collaborator, as he did for so many years with Annie Lennox. In Your Dreams has some truly breathtaking moments, like the wistful ballad “For What It’s Worth.” One can’t help but imagine what some of these songs would sound like with Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie harmonizing along, but that’s just a testament to the strength of the material. The title song is another winner, and first single “Secret Love” is a strong opener. Dave Stewart’s blazing guitar takes center-stage on the excellent “Wide Sargasso Sea.” It’s a shame that In Your Dreams didn’t do better commercially. It did reach #6 in the U.S. upon its release (although with first-week sales of barely over 50k), but quickly tumbled down the charts. There seems to be a tendency by fans of older artists to ignore the newer stuff, and that’s a shame. This is still the same Stevie Nicks who wrote and sang classics like “Dreams,” “Landslide,” “Sara,” “Gypsy,” “Stand Back,” “Nightbird” and so many others.

WORKING WITH LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM: Rob Cavallo, our producer said, “Hey, did my assistant tell you the news? Well, I don’t know if you guys know Fleetwood Mac?” Do we know Fleetwood Mac? Of course we do, they’re one of our favorite bands. “Well I’m really good friends with Lindsey Buckingham and I had him over for dinner the other night and he asked to hear what I was working on.” Rob then tells us Lindsey started noodling around on our song and Rob stopped the song and was just like, “Lindsey would you mind if I laid that down?” And he was like, “Sure.” It was enough for us just the fact that Lindsey Buckingham liked our music, but that he was inspired enough to play on it was incredible.

Fleetwood Mac Tour Manager Marty Hom reveals how John McVie cancer diagnoses discovered

Tour Managers of Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones & Fleetwood Mac Swap Wild Tales From the Road
Billboard

Some of you have toured with the same bands for more than a decade. Describe the bonds that form between you and them.

Hom: I've been with Fleetwood Mac for 17 years, Barbra for 13 years. If you've toured with somebody long enough, they are your family. And you're kind of like the dad who takes care of them, and they depend on you. The younger artists are a little different in that they surround themselves with entourages now. They have assistants, they have managers who go on the road, publicists, they have people. The relationships are still good but they're not as personal because there are layers of people you have to go through.

Sounds like it can get pretty intimate.

Hom: Let me tell you how intimate. I had to tell Ian Astbury from The Cult that his father had passed away. They were onstage at the old Omni in Atlanta, and the manager called me. It was one of the hardest things I had to do.

I was just in Europe with Fleetwood Mac and [bassist] John McVie wasn't feeling well. So we got him to a doctor in Berlin. And he called me afterward and says, "Marty, can you come over to my hotel and talk to me?" I know that's not good, so I jump in a cab and go over to his hotel. We sit down and he says, "I've just been diagnosed with cancer." And John's sitting here and then Mick [Fleetwood] comes over, and we have a discussion of what we're going to do next. We ended up canceling Australia and New Zealand-15 sold-out shows. The band thought about moving on without a bass player but...you can't get onstage without John McVie.

Mick Fleetwood goes his own way: Dreams of vinyl

CALL me retro but I still love records. I have great memories of shopping for vinyl, playing amazing albums, listening to records with friends, trading music and discovering new sounds.

By: Mick Fleetwood
February 23, 2014

Records have always been a huge source of inspiration. To me there is nothing better than looking at the cover artwork, reading the liner notes and taking in the album’s entire experience.

The way they master music today, much of the integrity of the sound – the emotion and subtlety – is lost. Fleetwood Mac records have an organic sound that is more comfortable to the human ear. At least to mine!

I love listening. I am a great listener, although perhaps a few of my exes might not agree! But I repeat, I am a great listener. Being a drummer, I am well trained to listen. I am not playing a melody but listening to see where the beats come in, that is my skill. My hearing is sharp, acute, first rate.

When we were in the last phases of making the Rumours album, it dawned on the band that all that listening, playing, singing and writing, all that heartache and pain, time and poetry, was just sitting there on two reels of tape, totally vulnerable.

We realised that anything could happen to it. Of course, we never had a hard drive to back it up like you do now. It could all have been lost in an instant.

All kinds of what if? paranoia flooded our brains. What if there was an earthquake, a fire? What if a giant magnet came down from outer space and wiped out half of our reel? We made contingency plans and had copies made of the multi-tracks. Those we had locked up in a bank vault in Phoenix just to be safe.

We were like expectant parents with that album. We went so far as to accompany our “baby” to the “delivery room” and watched the first pressing of Rumours at the pressing plant. We stayed for hours, checking and rechecking to make sure the sound had kept its integrity.

We even hired an engineer whose only job was to watch over the quality of our sound. We were that protective.

My ears miss that analogue sound. Most people have no idea that what they are hearing on a daily basis is actually digital sound, or that digital sound has no sound waves, no high fidelity. All that compressing, in my opinion, takes a lot of the traditional dynamics out.

Fleetwood Mac released a full box set of vinyl recently and I know I am not alone in my fanatical audiophile ways. I just picked up a small, portable record player sold by Jack White’s Third Man Records. This record player actually has great sound.

I use it on the road so I can pacify my demanding ears and I have a lot of fun with it. At home I have a Thorens deck to play my beloved vinyl.

Did you know that you can actually play the gold ones, too? This, I discovered, after some hullaballoo in the late Seventies when people were complaining that their Rumours albums were not actually playing the album they had bought but a Frank Sinatra record instead.

I remember popping my gold record out of the frame to see what all the fuss was about. Sure enough, there was old Frankie Boy crooning away and my gold record spinning on the record player. Ironic after all the care we took at the pressing plant! I guess someone on the assembly line had gone to sleep on the job.

Of course Warner Brothers stopped the press but, hands down, I bet that Frank Sinatra/Fleetwood Mac album may be one of the most collectable we put out. Meet our precious baby, Frank. Isn’t he cute?

Stevie Nicks really wants to write music for 'Game of Thrones

Stevie Nicks really wants to write music for 'Game of Thrones'
Last September, 2013 in an interview with the UK publication the Telegraph, Stevie Nicks threw out into the universe how much she adores the HBO series Game of Thrones and that she had written some poetry based on the show and its characters... saying:

“I lived in the Twilight world for, gosh, four or five years. But Game Of Thrones is just… heavier,” she says, eyes a-flutter. “And season three – the brutality is over the top!” she hoots, delighted. “The dragons are growing, and the characters are all brilliant. I mean,” she whispers,
“I think of them like they’re real people.”

Nicks has duly done what she’s always done and put pen to paper.

“I’ve written a bunch of poetry for each of the characters in Game Of Thrones. I’m always looking for that kind of inspiration.”

In a more detailed interview published in The Herald in Scotland in October, 2013, she elaborated a little more during an interview saying that after her mother passed away in December, 2011 she watched the entire first season of Game of Thrones and it really took her mind off of everything.

When Stevie was asked if she was a fan of the show?

"Yes! The author [George RR Martin] is my age and it blows my mind that he's able to create this vast, interlinked world. As a songwriter I write little movies. But I can't imagine sitting down and writing even one small book. But then probably somebody like him couldn't imagine writing Edge Of Seventeen or Rhiannon - couldn't write a whole little life in two verses and a chorus. And of course I would love to write some music for Game Of Thrones. I've written a bunch of poetry about it - one for each of the characters. On Jon Snow… On Arya… On Cersei and Jaime."

At the time, her interest in the show made quite a splash across the internet... She talked quite extensively in various interviews last year about her love for the series.

This past Sunday Sunday (February 16th), UK publication Radio Times magazine, published portions of Stevie's interviews in what seems to be publicity to build up the season four premiere of Game of Thrones on Sky Atlantic April 7th in the UK and also on HBO in North America.

As a result, The Hollywood ReporterCBS News, Rollingstone Magazine, the LA Times and Billboard just to name a but a few, picked up again on the article.  As a result, Stevie is/was trending on Yahoo today and Twitter somewhat exploded.

Great publicity for both Stevie and Game of Thrones.  I hope she does write some songs inspired by the show... It's a great show and it's right up her alley! Can't wait for season four!

Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks make big moves on the US Album and DVD Charts

USA - February 22, 2014
This week in the U.S., Fleetwood Mac's "The Very Best Of" re-enters the Top 200 Albums Charts at no.170 and re-enters the top 50 Catalogue Chart at No.34.  On last weeks Top 200 Albums Chart in the U.S., "Rumours" was at No.59. On this weeks chart it completely drops off - which is a massive drop!  The album also disappears off the Top 50 Catalogue Charts from No.8 last week.  The other big mover this week is Stevie's "In Your Dreams" DVD which moves up to No.16 this week from No.27 last week. With it being its 10th week on the chart, that's a pretty healthy leap forward... Could still be the result of a bounce off the American Horror Story appearance.

Lindsay Lohan On the Edge of Incredible -- She CRUSHES Stevie Nicks Live
For some strange reason this made a big splash across social media and the media outlets that tend to lean more heavily towards gossip.  I guess it's because it's Lindsay and she hasn't really sung in quite some time.

Lindsay Lohan sung “Edge of Seventeen” at New York Republican Party Finance Committee chairman Matthew Mellon's 50th birthday on Tuesday night.  You can't really get a good sense of how she really sounds in the amateur video or in the video below... But in the longer clip released earlier in the week, she sounded alright, nothing more than what anyone else would sound like with a bit of singing experience had they been out at a karaoke bar.

Video: Bill Murray reveals he helped Stevie Nicks during rough time with his movie Caddyshack

Bill Murray tells Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning while talking about the effect Caddyshack has on people, how the movie helped Stevie saying:

“You know who Stevie Nicks is from Fleetwood Mac?” the actor, currently co-starring in The Monuments Men, began. “I always thought she was like an ice queen. [But] she just walked up [to me] and said, ‘You know, I was having a hard time once. And I watched [Caddyshack] for a week or something. I just kept watching that movie. And it just cheered me up so much.’”

Murray revealed that the compliment gave him a new perspective on his comedy career. “I thought, ‘Man, if I did something like that for someone who is such an important person to so many people’ . . . I felt really good about that.”

This week on the charts: Fleetwood Mac | Stevie Nicks "Seven Wonders" and "Rumours" Bound

USA - February 15, 2014
Fleetwood Mac released 'Rumours' 37 years ago this past February 4th and although the album took a giant leap up the charts this week after re-entering the charts three weeks ago, I'm not entirely sure it was due to it's anniversary.  This week the album moves up the Billboard Top 200 to No.59 from No.191 last week. That's a fairly significant increase in sales week over week.  The bounce on the charts could largely be due to Stevie's appearance on American Horror Story, as I didn't see any deep discounting of the album online.

SEVEN WONDERS IS A SALES WONDER
Fleetwood Mac's classic '80's tune "Seven Wonders" featured during the cold opening of the season finale of American Horror Story on January 29th benefits from the exposure on the show and Stevie's Guest Appearance.  According to Billboard, the song sold 13,000 downloads during the tracking period ending February 2nd. This is an increase in sales of 9,086% vs what the song did the week prior. On the Rock Digital Songs Chart the song debuts this week at No.18.  In 1987 when the song was originally released as the second single from the album Tango In The Night, it peaked at No.19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No.2 on the Mainstream Rock chart.

Stevie's new film 'In Your Dreams' in it's 9th week of release hits it's lowest point on the Top 50 Music DVD Sales Chart moving down this week to No.27 from No.22 last week.

Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland charts below... The UK to follow later today.

She also says that what she currently does will likely go on another 6-7 years, then she'll flip over to Art. She would really like to show the art / drawings she's worked on for years and for the most part have kept away from the world.

A reminder to ourselves of what an integral strand Christine McVie is to Fleetwood Mac's superstar DNA

FLEETWOOD MAC:
CHRISTINE MCVIE’S TOP 15 CONTRIBUTIONS
by Mark Pursell
Glide Magazine

Even die-hard Fleetwood Mac fans forget (or never knew) that English-born Christine McVie was part of the band’s first incarnation as a British blues act whose intermittent success and ever-changing lineup prevented them from widespread success.  The Fleetwood Mac that people (especially Americans) tend to think of is the band’s California reinvention of the mid-‘70s, a reinvention that brought Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks on board and eventually resulted in the band’s permanent pop canonization.  The chemistry between Buckingham and Nicks, both on-record and off as writers, performers, and lovers, tended to throw a long shadow over the decades, perhaps unfairly obscuring the very real, very substantial contributions that Christine McVie made to the group’s success.

It’s usually obvious when a Fleetwood Mac track that belongs to McVie begins playing.  Her upbeat grooves are deceptively lighthearted, painting a contrast with the plainspoken but often emotionally raw content of her lyrics.  Said contrast seemed to speak to listeners; if you look at any breakdown of Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits, nearly half are written and sung by McVie. Her songs showcase a sunny exuberance that, taken in context of a full Fleetwood Mac record, build a perfect contrast to the band’s darker tracks.  She’s also underrated as a vocalist; her deep, bluesy voice works wonders in a pop-rock context, bringing a gravitas to her own straightforward but heartfelt songs and giving them cunning little dimensions that aren’t always immediately apparent.

In early 2014, Fleetwood Mac announced that McVie would be rejoining the band after a long hiatus.  There are plans to tour; some are even hoping for a new record.  In the spirit of McVie’s return, let’s revisit fifteen of her most accomplished, most enduring contributions to Fleetwood Mac, and remind ourselves of what an integral strand she is in the band’s superstar DNA.

Great grouping of songs... Some omissions that could have made the lists... But it's all subjective.

How does Fleetwood Mac follow-up "Rumours"? The answer is "Tusk"

Follow-up Albums: Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
(Originally broadcast May 24, 2012 on BBC Radio 4)

Radio 4 Archives have made this 28 minute Fleetwood Mac feature on Tusk available for download through their archive. Listen on-line or download from BBC Radio 4 (Scroll down the list for the link)

How do you follow a record that sells 21 million copies worldwide and spends over 30 weeks at number
one in the US album chart?

The answer is Tusk - the album Fleetwood Mac recorded in the wake of 1976's Rumours.

Despite joining the band just three years previously, this was the record that saw Lindsey Buckingham impose his will on Fleetwood Mac using the studio as a crucible in which he shovelled intra-band infidelities and his new-found love of punk.

In 1979 it was deemed a failure, nicknamed "Lindsey's folly" from industry insiders. After 35 years, it has been reappraised as their boldest, most forward-looking release, "a peerless piece of pop art", influencing Radiohead and REM.

"I don’t see Fleetwood Mac ever really stopping" - Stevie Nicks New York Times Interview

Stevie Nicks, Just Following Her Muse
The Creative Mid-Life
By JOAN ANDERMAN
New York Times

During her 40-year career as a member of Fleetwood Mac and a solo artist, the singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks has made more than 40 Top 50 hits and sold over 140 million albums. “In Your Dreams,” a documentary film about the making of her 2011 album of the same name, was recently released on DVD. Now 65, Ms. Nicks called from a rented house in Phoenix, her hometown. A condensed and edited version of our conversation follows.

You just finished a tour with Fleetwood Mac, a band with a tumultuous personal history. How do you all get along now?
Mick Fleetwood and I are best friends. We were mad at each other for six months or a year after we broke up, and then were able to return to who we were before. My relationship with Lindsey Buckingham is never going to be that. When it’s all said and done and I’m 90 years old, maybe I’ll be able to figure that relationship out. John McVie I adore. I look after him as much as I can [Mr. McVie was given a diagnosis of cancer in October] and make sure he puts ice on his back.

Are you surprised that the band is still together?
Surprised? No. It’s a really great band.

How has your voice changed?
I had a lot of problems with my voice from 1975 to 1998. We were only just starting to use ear monitors, and we’d been using huge floor monitors that blast the sound back at you and you just scream over it. There were many bad nights onstage. Since 1998 I’ve been working with a vocal coach, Steve Real, and I’ve never had a problem onstage since.

Do you have a voice care regimen?
Three hours before I go on-stage I do a 40-minute vocal lesson. We go on at 8, which means I have to be done at 5, so from 3 to 3:30 I do the first part and between 4:30 and 5 I do the second part; 30 minutes and then 11 minutes. By the time I walk onstage at 8 o’clock, I’m ready to do 2 hours and 40 minutes.

So your voice is in better shape than it was 30 years ago?
Oh, yes. I tell all the young people I know that sing to get a vocal coach. You don’t have to take them on the road like I do. They’ll make you a tape, and you’ll become a better singer.

Why the 10-year wait between your last two solo albums?
After I made “Trouble in Shangri-La,” which came out in 2001, I started realizing that everything my manager was telling me about how the Internet was going to eventually kill the music business was true. Records as we knew them, records as concepts, as 12 songs in a row that were sequenced, where you may not like the fourth song but you let it play because you love the way the third song went into the fourth song and the way the fourth song went into the fifth song, were definitely ending. And that was heartbreaking. I was told that the best thing for me to do as an older rock ‘n’ roll singer would be to tour.

Eventually you made “In Your Dreams.”
Well, I saw this movie, “New Moon,” in the Twilight series, and I was very inspired by that story so I wrote a song about it called “Moonlight.” And I thought, I can’t just put out this one song so I guess I’m going to have to put out a record. I got off the Fleetwood Mac tour in 2009 and hit the ground running. I called Dave Stewart [formerly of the Eurythmics] probably two weeks after I got home and said I’m ready to make a record now.
