Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham talk about making their first duet album

Longtime devotees of the rock band Fleetwood Mac might be forgiven for letting out a gleeful yelp when registering the news that singer-keyboardist Christine McVie shared with The Times in December while sitting next to her band mate -- guitarist, singer and producer Lindsey Buckingham.
“I've been sending Lindsey demos in their very raw form,” she says, sitting in the Village Studio’s storied Studio D in West Los Angeles, “and he's been doing his Lindsey magic on them, which I love.”
The product of that magic is tentatively scheduled to come out in May, and the two are at the Village to work on vocals. Working with them are two familiar names: Mick Fleetwood, whose towering drum kit is in the next room, and bassist John McVie.
The album coming out of these sessions, however, won’t bear the Fleetwood Mac imprimatur.
Rather, the release with the working title “Buckingham McVie” will arrive as the first full-length collaboration between the pair.
For hard-core fans, it’s not news that, save band mate Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac’s members have been holed up at the Village. At various intervals over the past few years, the band has acknowledged working on an unspecified project thought to be a new Fleetwood Mac album.
In fact, during a studio visit in 2014, The Times’ Randy Lewis sat down with Christine McVie and Buckingham to discuss her return to touring after 16 years away from the band.
“I thought, I'm really missing out on something — something that's mine, that I’ve just given up,” she said to Lewis. “I'm not paying respect to my own gift."
Nearly three years later, sharing a couch in the same suite where decades earlier Fleetwood Mac recorded its epic album “Tusk,” Buckingham says that after her return, he and McVie generated an entire album’s worth of material during the sessions.
“We got in here, and it made sense to me with what she had given me and what I done with it. But we still didn't know how it was going to play out in the studio,” Buckingham says.
He quickly realized that he’d had a pent-up enthusiasm for this kind of collaboration. “I loved doing it, because it's something that I haven't had a chance to do for Stevie as much as I did in the past,” he says, stressing that he continues to compose for solo projects.
“Those are a little more esoteric and off to the side,” he says, “but that's not the same as doing it for somebody else.”
McVie says she reconnected with Mick Fleetwood prior to joining the 2014 Fleetwood Mac “On With the Show” tour. She’d been living a solitary life in rural England when the drummer traveled to London in order to escort her to Hawaii, the destination she chose to help her overcome her fear of flying.
“I'd been virtually doing nothing in the country in 16 years of being a retired lady. Being busy walking my dogs — actually not doing anything very constructive,” she says. “I made one little solo album in my garage.” (2004’s “In the Meantime.”)
Buckingham remembers Fleetwood calling him soon thereafter. “He said, Christine's been over here and, you know, she would like to maybe rejoin the band." For Buckingham, it was a no-brainer.
McVie lets out a big laugh. “It’s unprecedented!”
“Yeah, but a lot of things about Fleetwood Mac are unprecedented,” says Buckingham. “I left for a long time and you guys got two guitar players and went ahead and did that for a while. Then I came back.”
“Weird times,” McVie says.
“Yeah,” Buckingham agrees. “I mean it's a band like no other.”
McVie, who is best known for writing and singing Mac gems including “Don’t Stop,” “Over My Head” and “Think About Me,” acknowledges that, early on in the Buckingham-McVie project, she doubted her ability to reconnect with her muse.
“I suppose I wondered if I believed in myself,” she says. “But I was like, 'Go for it, Chris. Go for it.' And, you know, a better thing's never happened to me. I've reconnected with the band and found a fantastic person to write with.”
Looking at Buckingham, she adds, “We've always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we've done between us.”
For his part, Buckingham’s initial songwriting contributions were the product of sessions with Fleetwood and John McVie, which Buckingham invited Christine McVie to augment.
“It was just pieces with no wording,” she says. “ so I put melody and lyrics on some of his material.”
“That was a first,” says Buckingham. “She would write lyrics and maybe paraphrase the melody — and come up with something far better than what I would have done if I'd taken it down the road myself.”
Those up on the history of Fleetwood Mac might note in the Buckingham McVie moniker the echo of an earlier duet album, “Buckingham Nicks.” Released in 1973 by the two future Fleetwood Mac members when they were a romantic and musical partnership, the Nicks and Buckingham release led Fleetwood a year later to invite the couple to join his band.
Nicks hasn’t contributed to the forthcoming Buckingham McVie project. She’s been on her own trip. In 2016, Nicks embarked on her “Rockin’ 24 Karat Gold Tour” with the Pretenders as openers. That tour will continue with a few dozen more dates across early 2017.
Her schedule, however, had little bearing on what Buckingham and McVie were creating, says Buckingham.
“All these years we've had this rapport, but we'd never really thought about doing a duet album before,” Buckingham says. “There is that album that I did with Stevie back before we joined the band, but other than that, it's all been Fleetwood Mac or solo.”
Interrupting with a tone of bafflement, McVie says, “And why on Earth? It seems absurd after 45 years.”
“Sometimes,” Buckingham says, “it takes, oh, about 40 years of perspective to figure it out.”
I am beyond excited for this, cannot wait to hear what this talented duo has created!
ReplyDeleteIndeed a disappointment that Stevie isn't a part of what might be the last recording by FM (or 80% of it). But Lindsey and Chris really do have a phenomenal sound all their own.
ReplyDeleteAny idea if they will tour with this or just add a song or two on next FM tour they have all signed on to do next year. Maybe there will be another FM album after this is out
ReplyDeleteAwesome! a Buckingham Nicks oops I mean Mcvie CD
ReplyDeleteStevie's loss...she's on the wrong side of this one...this is going to be awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad that this isn't going to be released with Stevie, but she has been pretty adamant about not wanting to do an album. She's always been there for Fleetwood Mac and now she just wants to do her own thing, which is understandable. I have a feeling there will be some negative responses, as Stevie being called selfish, but at this stage in her career, she deserves to be and should be respected for her decision. Stevie obviously has her reasons for not wanting to contribute - I know what she tells the press, but I am sure there are other issues as well.
ReplyDeleteI don't begrudge Stevie for not wanting to participate in the studio at this time. Her current tour is the first time she's been able to tour as a solo artist since 2012. There have been two big Fleetwood Mac tours in between.
ReplyDeleteThat being said Lindsey and Christine are masterful songwriters and should not have to sit on their completed work. "World Turning," "Don't Stop," and "Hold Me" are wonderful Mac songs and I can't wait to see what they've come up with.
Hopefully ... this will inspire Stevie to work with them on one last Mac outing before the band does decide to call it a day.
I'm looking forward to hearing new Christine McVie and Lindsay material for sure... such a shame Ms. Nicks seems too busy to be part of the band that launched her career... and how sad for the fans that have been supporting FM all these years, spending hundreds of $$ on concert tickets hoping to buy one more LP before they hang it up... a concert is one night every 3 years... an LP their fans have every day... :-(
ReplyDeleteWhile this might be a good idea, Stevie Nicks should get in there and contribute. She complains that Fleetwood Mac tours go on too long; now she has extended her own tour. She complains that no one buys albums yet she released two more since she "gave up". Get in there and contribute one last time.
ReplyDeleteGood for them. Their collaborations have always been pretty special.
ReplyDeleteChristine's music deserves to be brought into the 21st century and I'm kind of liking the idea of Fleetwood Mac w/o Stevie for no other reason than to hear something we won't be expecting.
Really looking forward to this. I hope it's hugely successful.
It may be one night in 3 years for the fans, but for the performers it's many nights every week for over a year. Stevie deserves time to devote to her solo career which has never interfered with FM obligations.
ReplyDeleteBut let's not make this into something negative. Let's just be happy that Christine and Lindsey have decided to do this. Band members come and go. Fleetwood Mac has always had a fluid lineup. The music that comes from the band, whichever members create it, is the point. I'm happy that Christine is happy, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what she and Lindsey have created together.
The reason Stevie released In Your Dreams was because of the inspiration of the song Moonlight. She has stated more than once that she didn't care if it sold or not. 24k Gold was a final contractual obligation and had to be made. She is NOT turning her back on Fleetwood Mac. It is her prerogative as to whether she wants to record with them or not. Lindsey walked away from Fleetwood Mac, if you will recall - this CD has a tentative release date of May. Stevie is not touring in May. There are personal reasons why she is so opposed to this CD and they are possibly all around working with Lindsey. They do not have the kind of relationship that people think they do. On stage, it's all an act. Lindsey was not happy that Stevie is singing Crying In The Night on her current tour and it's HER song. I am sure there are times when they get a long but from what Stevie has said in recent interviews, it's not fun recording an album with Lindsey.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping that Mick Fleetwood and John Mc Vie play on every new Buckingham Mc Vie song!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd the only reason it's not called a Fleetwood Mac album is for legal reasons that have to do with Stevie Nicks and her not being on the album.
I hope the Buckingham Nicks album sells at least a million copies in he United States!!! I am so stoked and can't wait to hear this masterpiece as soon as possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Fleetwood Mac does a 2017 tour they should perform some new Buckingham Mc Vie songs and record a live album. Stevie Nicks could sing harmony vocals for some new songs. Stevie would be able to stay out of a recording studio but still be heard on some of the new Buckingham Mc Vie/Fleetwood Mac songs.
ReplyDeleteLook foward to buying the album
ReplyDeleteSo exciting! Looking forward to an album and a tour with no childish drama.
ReplyDeleteDream on. There will be no tour behind this unless these people are going to self fund their own chartered jet and other perks they are used to. Promoters will only book this in 4000 seaters, not the kind of touring package they are willing to tolerate especially at their age.
DeleteI'm so glad Stevie isn't part of this project. She states that records don't make money so why waste time doing them. That greedy attitude will ruin this project. I can't wait to hear new music from Buckingham/McVie. Bye felisha!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for this! I've always wanted these two to collaborate on something. I would have loved a new Mac record but truthfully Stevie's voice has been below standard for a while. It's made here more recent offerings way below par. An album with her would have taken away music from Chris who we have not heard from in a long time.
ReplyDeleteFrom the comments so far, apparently nobody remembers that Stevie DID quit Fleetwood Mac once before... Doesn't anybody recall the album "TIME"?... oh, of course they don't because it was the dullest album ever released in the entire history of the band Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood Mac even played the Super Bowl opening show that year but of COURSE nobody remembers that nor should they. Without Stevie there is no reason Mick, John, Lindsey, and Chris need to collaborate as a quartet. They tried it and it sucked, big time. Poor Rebecca Bramlett got wedged in the middle of that travesty. Best of luck to Chris and Lindsey but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. Also, I think it's a blatant stick up the butt from Lindsey aimed at Stevie if this album ultimately is indeed titled "Buckingham McVie". NO CLASS Mr. Buckingham. The "Buckingham Nicks" album is beloved, revered, and cherished; he knows that. If he's going to crap on that legacy he might as well just call this album "Screw you Stevie". Yuk. It seems like it's getting nasty. Have some class Lindsey. Forgive my crude verbiage but this doesn't sit well with me. Come up with a classier title than that.
ReplyDeleteRather disappointing not to see Stevie working on this, but tbh it might have been a mess otherwise; her songs would have probably been demos, doesn't seem she writes as much anymore. I'm at least glad these sessions won't end up shelved like the in studio recordings for The Dance.
ReplyDeleteHer demos old & new are brilliant. They just couldn't fit on FM albums because of Christine's wonderful contributions and Lindsey's caterwauling jubberish. He needs to stick to lead guitar. Color his hair too. He looks like a lead member of the walking dead.
DeleteIt does seem that the band is still experiencing the drama they are known for. Humans are humans, what're you going to do? I'm sure this will be really good musically, and I imagine that without Stevie in the mix the drama quotient is less...just because she is one of the ingredients for the BIG drama. The sad thing is this means the end of FM as a studio band. It seems highly unlikely there would be another album after this one. The Lindsey/Stevie fight has driven both of them throughout their lives. One would think they'd have moved past it by now, but like the song says...Oh Well.
ReplyDeleteIf Mick Fleetwood and John Mc Vie play in every song on the this Buckingham Mc Vie album it will be just as much as Fleetwood Mac album as Say you Will is.
ReplyDeleteConsidering how talented Lindsey Buckingham and Christie Mc Vie are and with Mick and John as the rhythm section will make this Buckingham Mc Vie album smoking hot!!!
I don't think this album is an insult to Stevie, the other members have made it clear that they would love to have her on new record...as Christy said "hope springs eternal".
ReplyDeleteJust because she chooses not to, doesnt mean they should hang up their hats and go home.
Its true that none of them ( including Stevie, even as popular as she is) has done as well solo as they do as a group. They are more than the sum of their parts as Lindsey repeatedly says.
This band has been fairly fluid, member wise, over the years and unpredictable (thank you, Mr. Buckingham!) and I look forward to anything they release. Who knows, maybe when they go on tour they will all do the new music too.
It's sad that this has turned into a "let's bash Stevie" forum. When Christine quit the band (which Stevie isn't doing), no one bashed her, when Lindsey left, no bashed him. If people are going to get nasty about Stevie's voice, she can still sing, even if it is in a lower register. Lindsey and Christine's voice isn't the same as it was, but no one criticizes them. We don't know why Stevie doesn't want to record, we can only speculate. Although Lindsey MAY know how to produce her songs, it isn't done in a kind way. According to Stevie, they always fight when they are in the studio. As far as Stevie just recording her demos, why not? She has some really great demos that should be recorded. Christine is writing new material because she has been away from the band for a very long time and now she is inspired - this CD may do very well, but then, it may not. Who knows. It's disappointing to see the rage and negativity towards Stevie because her choice is not what other people may have wanted.
ReplyDeleteThe point is that time is running out. When Christine and Lindsey left it was roughly twenty and thirty years ago. They are now all around seventy years old and John has clearly stated that he's nearly done. They have time for an album and tour victory lap if they're lucky, sorry but it's now or never. Stevie's main consideration though is Stevie.
DeleteStevie didn't still quit the band because she's a greedy person (an attitude I honestly don't understand, given the fact that she doesn't have kids). She still wants to grab cash from tours. Christine quit the band but she still wanted to record with them, not touring. So yeah, quite a different attitude. Same goes with Lindsey. Stevie, on the other hand, doesn't care about art anymore, or the band.
ReplyDeleteSome Stevie's fans want this album to fail, just because Stevie isn't in it, a choice she made, if I remember correctly.
I wonder how the rest of the band managed to record with such a horrible person on studio as Lindsey... It's a miracle!
With all respect to all members of the band, everyone would love for stevie to come in and do her part. But for what ever reason she does not want to do it. It does not make her the bad member. For anyone who thinks she can't sing or write any more. You all are sadly wrong. With all respect to Chris she did not sound to good at the live show at the today show and some of the shows with her voice. Never has stevie had a bad vocal night like Chris did there. You Stevie haters just are looking for any bad in her. She has nothing more to prove she an icon and a legend and has the right to do whatever she wants to do at this time of her life. She has always been there for FM. She Has to cut her solo career short because of them and kudos for her sticking up for once, for her and her solo band. She has made it clear that she likes to go about every 3 years back and forth with her 2 bands. Its only been 1 year. Just because Chris is back she should not run to FM. Mick runs these tour way way to long. and they are all to tried and deflates the desire to tour and she needs time for her other band. What about waddy and the rest of her solo band members she would lose her members if she doesn't go back to them for a couple yrs. Lets face it her solo career will be there for a while after FM is over. Her solo band would be long gone if she does not go back to them. There is still a lot she wants to do with her own projects and FM is holding that stuff back. Its sad its come to this but maybe the fans are making a mountain out of a MO hill. She cant write with Lindsey anymore and that's it. Brian
ReplyDeleteI like that Christie says she really went for it... I hope the album has a Christie rocker or two - a few songs with cool jazz jams and a ballad or two. I think Lindsey was writing songs for a Fleetwood Mac album so his songs could be more straight ahead rock and roll which I am looking forward to hearing in May!
ReplyDeleteNever thought I say this, but I am disgusted with Stevie Nicks. She has somewhere along the line come to believe she is more important than the other four members of Fleetwood Mac and that shows her ego has ruined her better judgement. She would never had a career of any type were she not lucky to be invites into Fleetwood Mac when they didn't even want or need her. They needed Lindsey and this is a sad way to end the group. The other four should tell her to go fuck herself if she wants to only tour with them. Mick should have the balls to tell her she is ending the band out of here selfish ego. Fleetwood Mac is dead!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know why so many on this site seem convinced this duet CD with Christine & Lindsey is anything more than just what it says it is. This doesn't mean the 5 of them will never record a record again. For all anyone really knows they may already have an album recorded and are sitting on it for Later. A big part of all of this is just their brand of publicity.
ReplyDeleteProduct with Chris & Lindsey will be awesome. They can blow it out and get back to FM business in time for the next big nostalgia tour. Everyone knows the tour will sell out world wide provided Stevie does tour - which she has given every indication she is signed on. They are pretty much obligated to play the same stuff over and over again with maybe 3 or 4 deep cuts added in. God knows if they do release new material maybe one song of that will be played for about 7 shows before it gets dumped for something pedestrian. So relax everyone! It's all gonna work out just fine.
Guys... Can we all just cool it down a bit. This is a positive in many ways. We get new music for one!! That's huge! Sure Stevie doesn't want to record right now... but she may in the future - this may inspire her to want to be involved. And who's to say that everything they've written and recorded so far will go on this album of Christine's and Lindsey's... We just don't know. They could very well save half the tracks finished for future FM. I don't know... Go easy on all the band members. At this stage in the game the fact that they are even motivated to WANT to record is enough of a reason for me to be excited and supportive. I'm sure there's some politicking going on here, but that's them, always has been them - let them deal with their process and see where we end up.
ReplyDeleteThank you! This bashing of Stevie needs to end. What you posted makes sense. This doesn't mean there won't be a final Fleetwood Mac album. It's still sad though to see what "fans" think of Stevie if she doesn't meet "their" expectations. They should tell Stevie to go fuck herself? Really? Who wrote their only number 1 hit?
ReplyDeleteNo Stevie Nicks bashing coming from me. Stevie is a very talented singer and I hope Stevie tours with Fleetwood Mac in 2017.
ReplyDeleteStevie Nicks not writing and recording new songs with Fleetwood Mac is Stevie's business/issue. I do think that Fleetwood Mac/Lindsey Buckingham help make Stevie's songs much better than her songs are without Fleetwood Mac. I am disappointed that Stevie didn't/wouldn't sing harmony vocals in Lindsey's, Christie's, (Micks's and John's) new songs. But that's my problem and "hope springs eternal". Stevie, Lindsey and Christie singing harmony vocals always sounds amazing and always will.
The Buckingham Mc Vie album will be an absolute pleasure to buy and enjoy the morning of the day it is released!!!
I hope Stevie never records with FM again just so all you whining crybabies can keep on crying!
ReplyDeleteWell, she already said she won't do another FM album ever again, because she has to divide profits, and she's all about money, money, money these days. I wonder where that #1 hit singles writer went....
ReplyDeleteReally hard to be on her side these days. She should keep quiet until her super secong leg of her super tour starts again.
Personally, I prefer Stevie solo. I just read an article where she states she won't be releasing any new music due to streaming of music, but she has said this before and she recorded In Your Dreams. THis is also the reason why she said she is not writing new music. However, as proven by 24k Gold, she has more than enough demos to record another CD like that. At this stage in her career, she should be able to do what makes her happy. She loves to tour and that's what she does best. We are lucky to have her and that she is still able to perform beautifully.
ReplyDeleteWell said,Stevie is incredible with and without Fleetwood Mac
DeleteWhat a shame, Fleetwood Mac will now end on a low point instead of the victory lap that four fifths of the band wanted. Christine and Lindsey are obviously very inspired while Stevie has taken to releasing material that was written 30 years ago. As we know Stevie is also self obsessed, petulant and childish, that's nothing new but what a shame for the band, she just won't cooperate when it really counts. John has stated very clearly that he's nearly done with working, so the end is coming. I for one will support Christine and Lindseys album and tour if there is one, at least we will have great new music and a band that gets on and enjoys each other company and music without the Nicks drama!!
ReplyDeleteLindsey made that song a #1 hit, not Stevie. His arrangement was the key. She just turned in a bunch a crap and he turned it into gold.
ReplyDeleteAs I have stated, Stevie has reasons why she doesn't want to record with Fleetwood Mac that she is not willing to share with the public. She has said there is a lot of tension between her and Lindsey but it appears to go deeper than that. If you are not happy with Stevie's decision, don't buy her music and don't go to her concerts - it's very childish to bash her. This is NOT the end of the world.
ReplyDeleteIt's also very childish to bash Lindsey for Stevie's decisions... Why every bad decision she makes always has to do with Lindsey? Why everyone but Stevie is comfortable working with him? It appears to me that she is the one with issues with Lindsey, not the other way around. Thank God there wasn't any tension while he was helping her with Dreams....
ReplyDeleteI think it's time to say goodbye to Fleetwood Mac, Stevie. We FM fans and you are gonna be much better with you away from the rest of the band and touring alone... or with Tom Petty. And that's because I respect your decision.
I did not bash Lindsey. I was merely stating what Stevie said in an interview and she obviously is the only one who has an issue with Lindsey. They were involved with each other and I am sure everything he says to Stevie is taken to heart. That's why you should never work with friends, relatives or past lovers.
ReplyDeleteI would imagine there is not just one reason Stevie doesnt want to record, and probably some we'll never know about.
ReplyDeleteClashing egos (which she doesnt have to worry about solo) sharing profits/lack of record sales
(she really needs to stop talking about it, makes her look bad to her fans)
lack of songs to contribute, possibility? Lindsey's constant presence in studio prob not fun.
Although he is the one who helped her the most in her career, polishing, producing, cowriting, arranging her Mac songs, (inckuding the gem Dreams, people, she didnt just drop a fully completed song into their lap, Christie has said that Stevie's demos were indecipherable to anyone but Lindsey lol)
But it didnt come without out a price,
the understanding between them that enabled him to know what she wanted came from a painful history between them.
I give them all credit. Unlike some bands that have issues they seem to be being civil. She hasnt bashed them, and all they have said is they hope she records with them. Like another poster said, theories aside Im just grateful that they are all still here and officially together for us to even discuss, rant at, enjoy etc.
I'm not sure if people recall that Stevie only came in at the last moments of the Tango in the Night album (despite being adamant that Lindsey stay in the group after it was recorded). Stevie also had issues during the recording of that album, but (as "Welcome to the Room, Sara" hinted) they had little to do directly with Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey or recording. Stevie may still be reeling over the passing of her mother. Stevie may have some health issues of her own that, somehow, she can still find the courage to handle while on a solo tour. It may be something else completely. We don't know, and I guess we aren't supposed to. Tango in the Night (which _may_ be getting an expanded, deluxe release soon) was almost a Christine and Lindsey affair from the way it first started (a Lindsey solo album), it then evolved (Stevie was unavailable due to personal reasons), but then Stevie showed up, was (understandably) upset she wasn't hearing her voice on "Everywhere" (but so was Christine, and they ended up getting her into the mix), and despite only contributing three songs (of which one was pretty much written by Sandy Stewart). So maybe this may change too, before the album release. It<s the Mac, all... The only predictable thing is unpredictability. ;)
ReplyDeleteI'd like to look at this from a different angle, which may be influenced by the early announcement of a deluxe edition of the "Tango in the Night" album in box set form, tentatively slated for February 2017. Should this be released, it's possible that the release date for the album _tentatively_ titled "Buckingham McVie" (which I read as meaning "this is our working title for the time being") be pushed back, as the Mac may find interest in touring the TitN box set, or even a combo of the TitN box set and the Mirage box set from last year (not likely as Rumours seems to be the one which gets that distinction, but let's say for the sake of argument the new studio project's release gets pushed back). There are a few similarities between this project and TitN: 1) Lindsey pretty much started the ball rolling with both (in the case of TitN, he was working on solo album #3, whereas in the case of BM, he was recording takes with Mick and John when Christine offered some of her songs, and added lyrics and refined melodies for the songs Lindsey/Mick/John had already recorded). 2) Christine joins the sessions afterwards, but Stevie holds back due to personal situations to which the fan base is not officially made privy (for example, we now know Stevie checked into the Betty Ford clinic about the time TitN sessions started up, and the TitN song "Welcome to the Room... Sara" alludes strongly to this and has been confirmed as being about this... but did fans know the reason why she was absent from most of the recording sessions before TitN was released?). 3) Stevie had minimal participation in the TitN recording sessions _BUT_ ended up coming aboard, bringing a few songs (with only "Book of Miracles" and "What Has Rock and Roll Ever Done for You?" not being included in the album), adding "to Emmaline" instead of "you held the line" to Sandy Stewart's song "Seven Wonders" (which ended up being a great smash hit), and (after a documented argument) adding her harmonies to "Everywhere" (and presumably, "Little Lies"), helping to make those songs even more irresistible. Does anyone see where I'm going here? ;) With the Mac, the only predictable thing is... unpredictability. There's still time for the 5-person "magic" to happen. Either way, I'm looking forward to the album release. :)
ReplyDeleteGlen Burg thank you for your thoughts. I thin you make a very good point. Things tend to come around again while human beings tend to not change very much in their behavior. The TITN story did come to mind while reading about the current album in the works. Just my opinion I don't think Stevie's hesitancy isn't about money. I'd guess the deaths of Prince, Glenn Frey, Bowie has made her think she'd better choose fun while she has the chance. FMAC's last tour invaded her plans to promote 24K album so she's taking time for herself. Probably the thought of fighting with Lindsey in a studio isn't worth it for her right now. I do think you're right, that group is unpredictable. As much as Stevie seems nostalgic for Fleetwood Mac's story through the years, it doesn't make sense she wouldn't want to be part of their swan song.
ReplyDeletePS has anyone ever heard the band mention that it's funny that if you switched the titles of the Mirage and Tango In The Night albums, the artwork would be literal?
Thanks Tom! And to think the Mirage/TitN title swaps eluded me up until you mentioned it! (laughs) I do hope to hear the new album (and to buy most likely a CD copy, a LP copy and a hi-res digital/physical copy... Deluxe edition, anyone? ;) ). And if Stevie isn't on this one, perhaps the band will somehow unknowingly grant my request and do the thematic sequel to "Rumours" (which I dub as "Truth").
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly Lindsey told Fleetwood Mac (Stevie, Mick and John) after the Say You Will tour that He (Lindsey) wanted to record two solo albums before writing another Fleetwood Mac album. Lindsey ended up recording 3 solo albums. I think at least half Lindsey's most recent solo album Seeds We Sow songs could have been Fleetwood Mac songs. Especially the songs "That's the Way that love goes" and "End of Time"! "End of Time" seems to be all about Stevie Nicks and Stevie would have sounded perfect singing harmony vocals on that brilliant song. I think about the new Buckingham Mc Vie album everyday and can't wait to buy it the day it's released!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteChristine McVie's first solo album she recorded as Christine McVie rocks!!
ReplyDeleteI am surprised at how good it is. Lindsey sang harmony vocals on a few songs and Mick played drums on one song. Christine is great at writing ballads but she also a writes uptempo rockers too. Can't wait to hear the Buckingham Mc Vie Masterpiece!
Stevie is on tour right now which is her right, Lindsay walked away from Fleetwood mac and so did Christine, now Stevie doesn't want to record on the album, and people r calling her selfish,They r all amazing, and they r all better together,
ReplyDelete
