Stevie Nicks says solo career always came second to Fleetwood Mac

kshe95.com

Stevie Nicks says that her massive solo career always took second place in her heart to Fleetwood Mac. Nicks, who along with the Mac are out on the road for their sold-out first tour with the returning Christine McVie since 1998, explained why she even went solo in the first place, telling NPR: "When you're in a band with three great writers, you only get one third of the writer thing. So that's the whole reason that I did a solo career. And that's when I told Fleetwood Mac I was going to do that, they were of course terrified that I would do that record and then that I would quit. And I said to them, 'You guys. . .' I mean, I wanted to go around and hold each one of their hands and say, 'Listen, my loves. I am never going to leave you. I just need a vehicle. I can't, I have trunks of songs from 1973 that are never going to be heard. So the only reason I'm doing this solo thing is so that I can throw a few more songs out."

She went on to explain how she pitched it to her bandmates -- Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, and John and Christine McVie -- saying, "So while you guys take your extended vacations: Lindsey, while you lock yourself in the studio and make records that nobody's ever going to hear; John, you're going to go and get on your boat and sail, actually sail, from L.A. to Hawaii and back, and get lost out there, and we're going to lose you and not know where you are; Christine is going to go back to London and hang out with her friends. While you guys are doing that, I'll make a record, I'll put it out. I'll do a month of shows. And I'll be done, and I'll come back. It's never going to be in front. It's never going to be Fleetwood Mac. I'm the Learjet and they're the 738."

Stevie Nicks has been a solo superstar for over four decades now. We asked her how she feels about juggling two very high profile careers over the years: "A solo career and Fleetwood Mac are a really great thing to go back and forth to. Because, y'know, you can do your solo work and then you could do Fleetwood Mac, and then you can go back to your solo work and then you could do Fleetwood Mac. It really is kind of a blessing in many ways. You never get bored, so you can do your thing until you start to get bored and then you can go to the other thing. (Laughs) And then you can do that until you start to get bored and go back to the other thing. And it really makes for staying in a much more excited and uplifted humor for everything that you do when you're not just doing one thing."

Fast Facts:

Stevie Nicks' latest solo set, 24 Carat Gold: Songs From The Vault, debuted on the Billboard 200 album charts at Number Seven and features newly recorded versions of lost and/or long bootlegged tracks. The set was co-produced by the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart along with longtime guitarist Waddy Wachtel, and recorded in only three weeks.

Nicks said in a statement about the set, "I used to make cassettes of my songs and hand them out. But to know that these songs have finally been recorded with the same love they were originally created is joyous for me. I picked 12 songs from about 40 demos made from 1969 to 1987 and one each from 1994 and 1995. These songs are all about love and heartbreak -- how to pick up the pieces -- how to keep moving… I’m really chronicling love from the very beginning."

The deluxe tracklisting for Stevie Nicks' 24 Karat Gold - Songs From The Vault is: "If You Were My Love," "Mabel," "Normand," "Twisted," "24 Karat Gold," "Belle Fleur," "All The Beautiful Worlds," "Lady," "I Don’t Care," "Watch Chain," "Hard Advice," "Carousel," "Blue Water," "Cathouse Blues," "The Dealer," and "She Loves Him Still."

#ICYMI Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks gives Rolling Stone a private performance of one of her last album's stand-outs

Watch Stevie Nicks Perform a Serene, Solo 'Blue Water'

Rolling Stone's most recent cover story is a long, intimate look into the life of Stevie Nicks. While the issue was coming together, the Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter sat behind a piano and played a handful of songs for our cameras. Above, watch her perform "Blue Water," a meditative track that from last year's 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault. Lady Antebellum provide harmonies on the record, but here Nicks goes completely solo.

Pop Tart: The pure 24 Karat Gold of Stevie Nicks

by Richard Burnett
Montreal Gazette

When my boozing buddy Jamie and I made our entrance at the absolutely packed, internationally-famed annual Stevie Nicks drag queen rock’n’roll tribute Night of a Thousand Stevies in New York City some years ago, New York hadn’t seen so much trash since the Teamsters’ citywide garbage strike of 1990.

No, I didn’t trip and slide face-first into the gutter like I did on Bourbon St. in New Orleans one Halloween, but I knew I was in deep trouble when my bartender told me she couldn’t serve me triple vodka-sodas because her glasses weren’t big enough.

As beautiful as the audience was – girls and boys everywhere dressed in Stevie’s trademark leather and lace – the real entertainment was on the stage. There were lip-syncing drag queens and kick-ass live performers. Then to close the show, Goon Squad – featuring Blondie’s Debbie Harry on lead vocals – destroyed the place with their balls-to-the-wall punk version of The Chain.

I have been to every major drag event in London, Sydney, Paris, New Orleans, Vegas and Montreal, and I’m telling you, NOTS is hands-down the most fun drag event I’ve ever been to. Revellers get dolled up à la Stevie, including past attendees Courtney Love, Cyndi Lauper and Boy George. Even I wore a blond wig.

“I hope next year maybe Stevie will come,” ab-fab NOTS co-hostess Hattie Hattaway (a.k.a. Brian Butterick), who produces NOTS with her fellow Jackie Factory NYC co-founders Johnny Dynell and Chi Chi Valenti, told me after the show.

Now flash-forward to Stevie’s new critically-hailed 2014 solo album 24 Karat Gold –Songs From The Vault, produced by Dave Stewart, Waddy Wachtel and Nicks, and recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles. The songs were written between 1969 and 1995, and the artwork for the CD includes never-before-seen Polaroid photos snapped by Nicks throughout her career. The album leads off with Starshine, for my money Stevie’s best rock number since Edge of Seventeen, and the emotional highlight is the country-soul of Blue Water, with backing vocals by Lady Antebellum.

Stevie Nicks: No more boys' club!

Stevie Nicks has spoken about how Christine McVie's return to Fleetwood Mac has reignited the band's "feminine" side.

Stevie Nicks Takes A Trip Down Memory Lane

Stevie Nicks is thankful Fleetwood Mac is no longer a "boys' club".

The 66-year-old music icon released her eighth solo studio album in October, amid her band's grand On with the Show world tour. And she has described what it's like to have former bandmate Christine McVie back on the team.

"It's not the boys' club anymore," she explained to Access Hollywood. "Now Christine and Stevie are back to being their very 'force of nature' selves."

Stevie also spoke about what it was like when Christine quit the band back in 1998, after being with them for 30 years. With the gender balance very male heavy, things apparently lost their feminine touch.

"We're in touch with our feminine selves again. Without her it became very masculine," she said.

Fleetwood Mac is known not only for their trail of smash hits over their active years, but also their drama. Stevie famously dated their guitarist Lindsey Buckingham for numerous years.

Their relationship was notoriously reflected in their 1977 album Rumours. Stevie says although it's all in the past, she hasn't forgotten how it felt.

"It doesn't still hurt but it's still reality. It's still real," she told the outlet.

Stevie's latest solo album is called 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault. According to her, it's filled with tracks that never quite made the final cut of her previous albums.

"These are the golden songs," she smiled. "These are the songs that should have gone on many different records from 1975 up, and didn't for many reasons."

Stevie Nicks Stays Gold... And she power naps! “Naps are the new cocaine.”

Stevie Nicks Stays Gold
By Tom Lanham
Paste Magazine

Multiple-Grammy-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stevie Nicks has soaked up a lot of wisdom over her 47-year career. But she can’t help chuckling over the prescient accuracy of knowledge passed down from legendary hard-partying L.A. guitarist Waddy Wachtel, who worked with her on 24 Karat Gold – Songs From the Vault, her stellar new collection of previously unrecorded originals, dating from 1969 to 1995. His hilarious quote? “Naps are the new cocaine.” “And it’s so true, it is sooo true!” she purrs, phoning one recent afternoon from her oceanfront Los Angeles home. “And you know what? I was going to take a power nap today, and we forgot that we had to talk to you. So I said ‘Okay—no power nap today!’”

As a kid, adds the singer, 66, her own mother would catnap daily: “And I used to think ‘That is so stupid—you’re going to go lay down for 35 minutes?’ And she’d go ‘Yeah, but it changes your life!’ And when we were younger, we would never have thought that that would have helped. But it does. So I do that, too. And about five o’clock every day, I start going ‘Okay—I need to lay down.’ And people look at me like, ‘Really?’ And I’m like, ‘No. Seriously. I need to go lay down and be away from all you people for 30 minutes to an hour. So I am disappearing now.’”

As interviews go, not a bad way to start. Your subject is awake and ready to talk. Groggy, perhaps. Maybe just a tad resentful. But definitely eager to discuss the current renaissance that’s sweeping through her life and rocketing her back onto the pop-cultural radar.

Stevie Nicks Talks Challenges of Promoting Solo Album While on Tour with Fleetwood Mac

Stevie Nicks Talks Challenges of Promoting Solo Album While on Tour with Fleetwood Mac: "I Don't Wanna Tick Anybody Off"

Stevie Nicks has an new solo album -- 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault -- of which she's

justifiably proud.  She hasn't been able to spend much time promoting it, though, because her day job as the lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, currently out on a massive world tour, is keeping her pretty busy.  Last week, during a break in the tour, she appeared on The Tonight Show to perform "Lady," one of the new songs, but she says it's unlikely you'll see her do that onstage with the band.  Why?  It's complicated, says Stevie.

"I don't even know if the people in Fleetwood Mac have even heard this record.  Honestly.  We don't talk about it a lot," Stevie tells ABC News Radio. "It's like, y'know....it's not their thing.  So I don't push it on them, and I just let it go.  I don't wanna tick anybody off, and I don't wanna make people think that I'm not focused on Fleetwood Mac, because I totally am...but in my own time, then I can do anything I want, and I can promote this record."

As for the possibility of her taking time out during a Mac performance to spotlight a tune from 24 Karat Gold, Stevie says, "Could Christine [McVie] play 'Lady' and me sing it, and she sing a harmony?  Absolutely.  Will that happen?  Probably not, but maybe."  Noting that she really wanted her bandmate to hear the record, she laughs, "I put it on her iPod. I bought her an iPod and then put it on the iPod!"

24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, which debuted in the top 10 when it was released in September, is a collection of songs that Stevie wrote mostly between 1967 and 1989, with a few from the '90s thrown in.  But Stevie explains that these songs aren't a bunch of rejects that weren't good enough to be included on albums: they just never made it for a variety of reasons.

"These weren't songs that weren't the 'better' songs.  Some of them were recorded by Fleetwood Mac and I didn't like it," she tells ABC News Radio. "You'll get three-fourths of the way into recording a song and you'll just go, 'I don't like the way it's coming out, so I'm pulling it.'  Same with my own producers: 'I don't like what you've done with the song, so I'm pulling it.'"  Or, 'There's too many fast songs,' 'Too many mid-tempo songs,' 'Too many ballads -- a ballad has to go.'  So, that's what happened to these songs.  These songs should have all been on records already."

As Stevie continues to eke out time to promote 24 Karat Gold, she says she is truly enjoying the Mac tour, since it's the first one to feature Christine McVie in 16 years.  "She's so excited and she gets, just, like sixteen-thousand people on their feet screaming several times a night," laughs Stevie. "And it's pretty spectacular.  So she's getting, like, spoon fed this amazing reaction of people being so happy that she's back that she's just thrilled, you know?  She just feels like she won the lottery!  So, it's pretty great to watch and I think it's really fantastic.  Everybody's in really good shape."

They'll have to be, considering the Fleetwood Mac world tour will stretch far into 2015.  That's why Stevie says she can't say right now if she'll join the rest of the band in the studio to record a new album, as Mick Fleetwood says he hopes she will in his new autobiography.

"I don't know, because nothing can be done on that until we're done, and we have another seventy shows until this American tour is done, then we have Australia, then we have Europe.  This isn't gonna be done until this time next year," Stevie tells ABC News Radio about the prospect of a new Mac album. "So, I don't know how I'm gonna feel in a year."

"I don't know whether I'm gonna wanna go back to my own thing or whether I'm gonna wanna sign up for another year of making a record," she adds. "I don't really know what I'm gonna wanna do then."

Fleetwood Mac is currently on tour in Canada. They'll return to the U.S. next week but have dates scheduled in North America through March.

TODAY: Stevie Nicks FACEBOOK Q&A (Nov 5th 3:45 PM EST)

Check this out!

Stevie week continues on Wednesday November 5th with a Facebook Q&A beginning at 3:45pm ET.

Tonight she's on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Tuesday morning she's on "Today" with Kathie Lee and Hoda (10-11am hour) and now a Facebook Q&A on Wednesday - which is a FIRST!!

Head on over to her official Facebook Page... Like it... and check in on Wednesday afternoon.  This is pretty exciting actually! She's never done anything like this before. Think of something cool to ask her other than the usual questions which she's answered a million times before.  She's obviously promoting the new album, so maybe now that you've had a month to listen to it, you are left with questions about something on the album, or a song... or maybe it's about what she plans on doing in the future solo wise.

REVIEW: STEVIE NICKS SOUNDS GOLDEN ON ‘24 KARAT GOLD ★★★★ stars

by brent80
brentmusicreviews.com
★★★★

Veteran Stevie Nicks might’ve confused people with the title of her latest album, 24 Karat Gold – Songs From the Vault. The reason being, the new studio album from Nicks is assumed to be a compilation effort rather than a true follow up to Nick’s 2011 LP, In Your Dreams. It is a new effort in regards to being recorded in 2014, though many of the songs were written in past by Nicks, dating back to the late 60s! The final results – spectacular!

“Starshine” opens 24 Karat Gold electrifyingly with a driving groove, quick tempo, and assertive vocals by Nicks. Dynamic, filled with bold guitars and bluesy, unfurled organ, “Starshine” definitely gets the listener’s attention by all means. Follow up “The Dealer” may be even more alluring, with Nicks sounding nothing short of terrific. The songwriting, particularly the refrain, stands out the most: “I was the mistress of my fate / I gave it all out / If I’d have really known different / you’d have to watch out.”

Congrats to Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold enters Billboard Top 200 at No.7 (6th Top 10 Album)

Rock legend Stevie Nicks nets her sixth top 10 solo album, as her quasi-archival release 24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault set starts at No. 7 (33,000). It’s her 13th top 10 album (combining Fleetwood Mac and solo releases). The set consists of newly-recorded material that was written and recorded in demo versions in earlier years. 24 Karat Gold follows Nicks' In Your Dreams, which debuted (and peaked) at No. 6 back in 2011 (52,000 sold in its first week).

REVIEWS: Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold "A beguiling collection of songs"

Stevie Nicks: 24 Karat Gold - Songs From The Vault
by Brian Boyd
Irish Times
★★★★ out of 5 stars

A selection of old demos, some stretching back to the 1960s, the eighth studio album by one of the voices of Fleetwood Mac is one of the best things she has ever done. With perspective, she sings these songs with a lovelorn resignation, imbuing them with a rare sense of pathos and philosophical regret. Lady is a rueful, self-doubting ballad while Starshine is turbo-charged FM rock. Nicks’ voice is always a thing of wonder; from easy-listening Laurel Canyon-type stylings to fuzzed-out rock and electrified folk, she can handle anything. On the standout Blue Water, she sounds as forlorn as early Gram Parsons, while I Don’t Care is blues rock perfection. Contemporary retrospection this may be, but she gets to the emotional core of almost everything here. A beguiling collection of songs.

Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
All Music
★★★★ 1/2 stars out of 5

With the subtitle "Songs from the Vault," you'd be forgiven if you thought 24 Karat Gold was an archival collection of unreleased material and, in a way, you'd be right. 24 Karat Gold does indeed unearth songs Nicks wrote during her heyday -- the earliest dates from 1969, the latest from 1995, with most coming from her late-'70s/early-'80s peak; the ringer is a cover of Vanessa Carlton's 2011 tune "Carousel," which could easily be mistaken for Stevie -- but these aren't the original demos, they're new versions recorded with producer Dave Stewart. Running away from his ornate track record -- his production for Stevie's 2011 record In Your Dreams was typically florid -- Stewart pays respect to Nicks' original songs and period style by keeping things relatively simple while drafting in sympathetic supporting players including guitarists Waddy Wachtel and Davey Johnstone and Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. It's certainly not an exacting re-creation of Sound City but Stewart adheres to the slick, hazy feel of supremely well-appointed professional studios, so 24 Karat Gold has a tactile allure. Sonically, it's bewitching -- the best-sounding record she's made since 1983's The Wild Heart but, substance-wise, it's her best since that album, too. If there aren't many remnants of the flinty, sexy rocker of "Stand Back" (the opening "Starshine" is an exception to the rule), there's enough seductive, shimmering soft rock and the emphasis on Laurel Canyon hippie folk-rock feels right and natural. Retrospectively, it's a surprise that Nicks sat on these songs for years, but that only indicates just how purple a patch she had during Fleetwood Mac's glory days. It's a good thing she dug through her back pages and finished these songs, as she's wound up with one of her strongest albums.

Album review: 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault by Stevie Nicks

Fleetwood Mac may have just started a mammoth tour of the United States, their first with songbird Christine McVie in 17 years, but Stevie Nicks has still managed to release a new solo album, this month.

24 Karat Gold: Songs From the Vault, is a collection of 14 songs from Nicks’ enormous back catalogue of demos that never made it onto her records- songs which were written between 1969 and 1995.

Recorded over a three-month period, Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart was once again on production duties. After producing her last album, In Your Dreams, which was something of a let-down both musically and lyrically compared to 2001’s Trouble in Shangri-La, 24 Karat Gold makes much more of a statement than both of the aforementioned releases.

This may be, in part, due to Nicks herself also producing the record, with the help of long-time collaborator Waddy Watchel, who featured heavily on her early solo albums.

The reason this record has much more of an impact than her more recent albums, is possibly because each of the 14 tracks follow the same theme. In the liner notes, Nicks states: “ Each song is a lifetime. Each song has a soul. Each song has a purpose. Each song is a love story… They represent my life behind the scenes, the secrets, the broken hearts, the broken hearted and the survivors.”

Kicking off with the Rolling Stones-esque Starshine, Nicks’ unmistakeable nasal voice remains as constant as her chiffon scarves and platform boots.

Next up is The Dealer, which was demoed for both her first solo album, Bella Donna, and her third, Rock A Little. Finally making it onto 24 Karat Gold, it is very similar to the superior first version, demoed for Bella Donna.

Other fine up-tempo tracks include I Don’t Care, the token snarling ‘rock-out’ moment, which features at least once on most of Nicks’ solo records; and Cathouse Blues, more honky tonk in flavour.

That being said, this album’s finest moments take shape in the form of its darkest tracks. The title track begins with a pounding bassline, and goes into a haunting piano rhythm and jarring guitar part from Mr Watchell, as Ms Nicks sings about the chains of love.

Mabel Normand is another highlight on the record. Originally demoed for the Rock A Little album in 1985 – a time when Nicks was paying the price for her years of cocaine abuse – it documents the life of the silent film actress it is named after, who had the same substance battle several decades before. It becomes clear that Nicks is writing about Normand and herself in the song, as she sings: “She did her work, but her heart was quietly crying. I guess she even felt guilty about even dying.”

Gorgeously simple ballads, such as If You Were My Love and Hard Advice, nicely juxtapose the rockier material on the album.

24 Karat Gold is probably the most consistently fine selection of Nicks’ self-penned material since her 1983 album, The Wild Heart. A fine selection of similar yet different songs, each holding their own within this album, which is not something that could be said for Nicks’ last solo effort.

This is a real insight into the last 45 years of the life of one of the most unique and mystical talents there has ever been. Nicks has held nothing back, this time.

Stevie Nicks returns to bleak times despite Fleetwood Mac reunion

Lost in music
Stevie Nicks returns to bleak times despite reunion

DECADES AFTER DRUG addictions and turbulent love affairs scarred Fleetwood Mac, the reconciled band is back together on the road. But on a new album, Stevie Nicks is reviving some of those tortured times.

“Remember how it was/ Before our infamous past had begun/ You have to let him go,” Nicks, in her famously rugged contralto voice, sings of the advice offered by a friend — fellow rocker Tom Petty — about one of her failed relationships.

“He says don’t think twice/ Turn off the radio/It was finished long ago/Go write some real songs,” she sings as a simple acoustic melody gives way to a powerful rock refrain in classic Fleetwood Mac fashion.

The song, Hard Advice, is among 17 previously unreleased tracks on the now 66-year- old Nicks’ album 24 Karat Gold - Songs from the Vault, which was released last Tuesday.

Nicks said in a statement that the songs were each “a love story” and that they “represent my life, the secrets, the broken hearts.”

For her first album in three years, Nicks has not produced fresh songs or repackaged her old work but instead has returned to tracks she wrote over the years but never released.

Even though the songs lingered on the back burner for so long, Nicks recorded them in a mere 15 days with studio musicians in Nashville.

Fleetwood Mac’s acclaimed 1977 album Rumours took months to record as domestic disputes fractured the British-American group and contributed to the tensions inside the music.

Nicks was in a stormy onoff relationship with fellow singer and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. Keyboardist and singer Christine McVie and bassist John McVie had divorced and drummer Mick Fleetwood was struggling to keep together.

Nicks, whose lovers have also included Fleetwood and Eagles singer Don Henley, later in her career became notorious for ingesting cocaine in amounts so massive that doctors warned her that she risked a brain hemorrhage.

Another track off the new album, Lady, relates Nicks’ doubts as she and Buckingham, both impoverished, first moved to Los Angeles to make it in the music business and found that their relationship was already in trouble.

Nicks said that the song, which she wrote in 1971 and was her first on piano, has “really stayed in my head all these years.”

“I know that things are going to change/ But how to change them isn’t clear,” Nicks sings on the ballad.

Despite the past acrimony, the band has returned to the road with a tour of North American arenas that started in Minneapolis on September 30.

The tour marks the first time in two decades that Fleetwood Mac has its full line-up including Christine McVie, who quit the band in 1998 to retire to the English countryside but — now age 71 — said she had grown unhappy with the quiet life.

To the delight of Fleetwood Mac’s fans, McVie is singing her own songs once again with the 1977 track You Make Loving Fun second on the setlist Monday at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The full line-up had an earlier reunion in January 1993 when they performed for the inauguration ball of president Bill Clinton, who had adopted the Fleetwood Mac song Don’t Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow) for his campaign.

But for all of the emotional intensity in her songs, Nicks said that she does not plan to go all- out and dish on her former lovers in a memoir.

“The world is not ready for my memoir, I guarantee you. All of the men I hung out with are on their third wives by now and the wives are all under 30,” Nicks told Billboard magazine.

“I have a certain loyalty to these people that I love because I do love them, and I will always love them. I cannot throw any of them under the bus until I absolutely know that they will not care,” she said.
