ON THIS DAY: Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and "Dreams" both No.1 on U.S. Billboard Charts

On June 18, 1977 "Dreams" the second single released from "Rumours" topped Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart in it's 10th week of release.

The track written by Stevie Nicks, debuted on the Hot 100 on April 16, 1977 and spent 19 weeks in total on the chart logging 7 weeks in the top 10 and 4 weeks in the top 5. This is Fleetwood Mac's only No.1 single in the U.S. 

While "Dreams" topped the singles chart, the album "Rumours" was firmly sitting at No.1 for a 7th non-consecutive week. The week following "Dreams" reaching the No.1 position, "Rumours" was certified 3x platinum in the U.S. signifying shipments of 3 million units. This is massive for an album released only 4 months prior. Within a year, "Rumours" would sell 8.2 million copies in the U.S. and would go on to eventually be certified 19 x platinum in the U.S. by the RIAA where it stands today. Worldwide sales are reported to be over 45 million.

CHARTS | SALES UPDATE: These 4 Fleetwood Mac Albums Are Currently on Billboards Top 200

For the sales week ending May 5th and for Chart date May 18th.

EXTENDED PLAY, Fleetwood Mac's new 4 track EP enters the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #48 with total sales for the week in the U.S. of 8,602 digital units, which I still think is a rather poor showing even considering it was only available digitally.  RUMOURS re-enters the Top 200 at #149 with sales of 3,167 units vs 2,345 the previous week - a 35% increase.  Total Rumours sales in the U.S. since November, 1991 = 3,182,506.  GREATEST HITS moves down the chart to #172 from #108 last week on sales of 2,725 vs 4,232 the previous week.  Total U.S. album sales since November, 1991 when Soundscan began tracking album sales = 4,656,533.  THE VERY BEST OF re-enters the chart at #194 with sales of 2,461 units vs 1,844 the previous week - a 33% sales increase.  Total U.S. album sales since its release in November, 2002 = 1,566,150.

Total U.S. album sales since November, 1991 = 920,709.

The band's last full-length album, “Say You Will,” released on Reprise/Warner Bros., arrived on the chart almost exactly 10 years ago this week. The set debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the chart dated May 3, 2003. To date, it has sold 864,000 copies in the United States.

Fleetwood Mac’s Extended Play debuts at #48.

Fleetwood Mac's EP "Extended Play" will debut at #48 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Charts when Billboard publishes the chart on Thursday.  HitsDailyDouble estimated on Tuesday that the EP would come in at about #31 with sales of approx. 11,500. Actual sales haven't been confirmed yet, I'll post that info once I receive it - but it's likely not far off.

US Chart Update: Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" "Greatest Hits" and a Re-entry for Landslide

Both Fleetwood Mac albums "Greatest Hits" and "Rumours" that re-entered last weeks Billboard Charts drop off the Top 200 Chart but remain on the Top 200 Catalogue Chart.

"Rumours" slides from # 31 last week to # 103 this week on sales 1,929 units vs 3,565 last week.  "Greatest Hits" drops 10 places from # 46 to # 56 on sales of 2,406 units vs 3,089.  To date, Rumours has sold 2,921,026 copies in the US since soundscan began tracking over the counter sales in November, 1991.  Greatest Hits has sold 4,519,558.  "Rumours" has been certified in the United States at 19x Platinum (units shipped) and Greatest Hits has been certified 8x Platinum (units shipped in the US). 

Re-entering the Top Digital Tracks Chart "Landslide" came in at # 58 selling 8,672 downloads vs 3,666  the previous week.  To date, Landslide has sold 793,114 copies.

Fleetwood Mac Re-enter Billboard Top 200 Chart with 2 Albums this week

For the sales week ending January 8, 2012 significant enough sales in the U.S. were achieved by two Fleetwood Mac albums to re-enter Billboard Magazine's Top 200 albums chart date Janaury 21, 2012.

The Rumours episode on GLEE that originally aired back in May, 2011 was re-broadcast in the US this past week on January 3rd... Surely this must be the cause for the sales surge.  In 2011, the album sold at total of 144,000 copies (thanks in large part to "Glee") -- way more than the 48,000 it tallied in 2010 or 66,000 in 2009.

Things are starting to ramp up in the promotion dept. for Lindsey... We'll start seeing press and tv coverage over the next couple of weeks as the album release date nears.

Jerry Penacoli (Extra TV) met up with Lindsey today at his home and posted this photo to his facebook page saying that Lindsey sang his new single "Seeds We Sow" live acapella.

Also, Sandy Cohen of the Associated Press interviewed Lindsey at his home today... She tweeted that it was so cool to interview him as she has been listening to his music all her life thanks to her mother.

'In Your Dreams' has already surpassed that of her last album "The Soundstage Sessions" which debuted at # 47 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart back in April, 2009.  That album dropped off after spending only 2 weeks on the chart.  Hopefully with the news this week of the 15 city tour beginning in August it spurs a little more interest in the album and sustains it.  I think it would be a really good time to get that second single movin'!  It's reportedly "For What It's Worth".

Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" is primed to re-enter the Billboard 200, possibly within the top 30, while the band's Stevie Nicks could crash the top 10 with "In Your Dreams," her first studio album since 2001.

Concurrently, multiple "Glee" cast covers of tracks from "Rumours," unveiled on last Tuesday's (May 3) episode, are likely to dent the Billboard Hot 100 and Digital Songs charts to be released Thursday (May 12) on Billboard.com.

While "Glee" paid tribute to Fleetwood Mac's seminal album last week, Nicks' latest bow further illustrates the band's three famed lead vocalists' successful solo careers.

Here is a look at five hits, over 30 years, that Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie have scored while on break from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-enshrined legendary band.

Stevie Nicks Calls New Album 'My Own Little 'Rumours''

Stevie Nicks says it wasn't her intention to take a decade between solo albums.

Nicks -- whose "In Your Dreams," the follow-up to 2001's "Trouble in Shangri-La," comes out May 3 -- tells Billboard.com that she was ready to start work on a solo set in 2005 after touring with Fleetwood Mac.

"I was definitely ready to do a record," Nicks recalls, "but the powers that be, the people that surrounded me, pretty much said, 'Don't bother. It's not a good time. The music business is in a terrible place. There's no money, and the Internet piracy is taking over.'

I didn't know what to say, because I'm not a computer person and I don't have a computer and I don't Facebook or whatever. So I just said, 'OK.' If I hadn't been so exhausted from 135 shows I might have bought back on that a little, but I just didn't."

The wait may have been worthwhile, however. Nicks calls making "In Your Dreams" with producer Dave Stewart (along with Glen Ballard) "the best year of my life" and refers to the new album as "my own little 'Rumours.'" The trio recorded the 13-track set at a house Nicks owns in Los Angeles, and though she has mostly written alone in the past, Nicks collaborated with Stewart on seven of "In Your Dreams' " songs.

"We wrote the song 'You May Be the One,' and my eyes instantly opened and I understood why Paul McCartney and John Lennon wrote together -- because they each had something the other didn't have," explains Nicks, who gave Stewart a binder of 40 poems before they started working together. "And with Dave and me, he had thousands of chords and this amazing musical knowledge, and I had thousands of pages of poetry -- and I know six chords. It was like an amazing little meeting of the minds, and I immediately went, 'Well this is just great!' "

Some of the songs on "In Your Dreams" date back a ways in Nicks' life, including the first single, "Secret Love," which she wrote in 1975 about a love affair, and "Moonlight," which she also started in the mid-70s but finished after seeing the "Twilight: New Moon" film in 2009. Other collaborators on the album include guitarist Waddy Watchtel, Mike Campbell of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers and Mick Fleetwood, while Nicks called upon Lindsey Buckingham to perform on and help her finish "Soldiers Angel," which she says "is truly my most sacred and revered song."

Lindsey Buckingham unveiled the songs that will be on his September studio release, "Seeds We Sow," in an intimate concert Friday night (Apr. 22) that was filmed for broadcast and a DVD. Telling the audience at the 1,500-seat Saban Theater in Los Angeles, "I may have made my best work yet," Buckingham offered six songs from "Seeds We Sow" in a 19-song set that began with "Shut Us Down" and ended with the title track of the new album.

Throughout the evening, the Fleetwood Mac guitarist, singer and songwriter alternated between acoustic and electric guitar, playing solo and with his three-member band. There was never a moment, however, when his skills as a lead and rhythm guitarist were not the defining feature of a song, whether it was the still-hypnotic "Trouble," a grungy rendition of "Tusk" or a new tune with echoes of R.E.M. and the Psychedelic Furs.

"You must look for what is essential, what is the center, and that center is the guitar," he told the audience. "That child still lives within me."

Fleetwood Mac classics "I'm So Afraid," "Go Your Own Way" and "Second Hand News" made it into the set, alongside solo gems such as "Turn It On" and "Go Insane." In talking about his life as a father and husband, the 61-year-old Buckingham also drew a distinction between his hitmaking run in the 1970s and 80s and his self-financed new work.

"I live and work in two worlds," Buckingham explained. "On one hand, the big machine is Fleetwood Mac and other entities... and on the other hand, there's a small machine, the solo work." He went on to draw a comparison between studio movies and independent films, relating it to his world. "It is the small movies that feed the heart and allow us to take risks."

"Seeds We Sow" is Buckingham's third studio album in five years, a steady pace for a man who went nearly 14 years between solo releases. Formerly with Warner Music Group, Buckingham has not decided on how the new disc will be distributed.

Additions to this summary below are both the New York City shows on March 26th and April 6th at Madison Square Garden... Stevie's current single is about to drop off the Triple A Radio Play charts... With a decrease over last week in the number of times it was played at radio, this will likely be it's last week in the top 30.

On the Adult Contemporary charts she's down a postion to # 22 with radio plays flat for the week - but still maintains it's bullet.  Only one station picked up the track over the previous week up to the reporting deadline of April 11th.  The Oprah Effect isn't present here as this reporting period ended on Monday April 11th.  There should be some sort of effect on next weeks chart.

These charts will be published in Billboard April 23rd.

Nicks releases "In Your Dreams" May 3. The Nicks-written, Dave Stewart-produced first single "Secret Love" is bubbling under the Adult Contemporary chart.

In what should be a tour bursting with beloved hits, Nicks and Rod Stewart's "Heart & Soul" trek runs March 20 through April 23 (although the pair's April 15 show in Phoenix is the closest they'll come to Austin ...)

In an e-mail last year, Nowels called "Two Kinds of Love" (which inexplicably failed to reach the Adult Contemporary chart upon its release as the second single from "The Other Side of the Mirror") "one of my faves too!"
