Mick Fleetwood plays to the future in Maui

By Tracy Smith
November 24, 2024

The island of Maui is a mere dot in the enormity of the vast Pacific Ocean, but it's not hard to see why millions visit every year, and why there are some who never want to leave. Fleetwood Mac founder Mick Fleetwood fell in love with Maui decades ago, and put down deep roots. "Long story, a long love affair," he said.

"But it really is your heart and your home?" I asked.

"Uh-huh. People often think, 'Oh yeah, how often are you on Maui?'" Fleetwood said. "This is my home. No other place."

As a young man he'd dreamed of a place, a club, where he could get his friends together, and 12 years ago he made it happen in the west Maui city of Lahaina:  Fleetwood's on Front Street. The menu was eclectic – they served everything from Biddie's Chicken (just like Fleetwood's mom, Biddie, made it) to cookie dough desserts dreamed up by his children. It was also a place where Mick and friends could play. "We created, I created, a band of people under a roof," he said. "Instead of a traveling circus, it was a resident circus at Fleetwood's on Front Street."

And then, in August of 2023, the music stopped.

A wind-driven fire tore through western Maui, killing more than a hundred people, and consuming more than 2,000 buildings. Fleetwood was in Los Angeles when the fire started, and he hurried back to a scene of utter devastation.

And his beloved restaurant? A charred sign was about all that was left.

I said, "I understand your not wanting to be, 'Me, me, me,' especially in light of the lives that were lost, the homes that were lost; you don't want to make too big of a deal out of a restaurant."

"No."

"But at the same time, this was your family. This was your home. That must've been a huge loss."

"It was a huge loss," Fleetwood said. "And in the reminding of it, that wave comes back. Today knowing we're doing this, I go, like, Okay, this is gonna be … a day."

We took a walk with Fleetwood down the street where his place once stood: the last time he was here, the place was still smoldering. "Literally, parts of it were still hot," he said.

More than a year later, the Lahaina waterfront is still very much a disaster zone.

The decision about what to do with the land is still up in the air; the priority is housing for the displaced residents. But Fleetwood says he's determined to rebuild, just maybe not in the same place.

Asked what he pictures in a new place, he said, "For me, it has to encompass being able to handle playing music. There has to be music. We had it every day. That's a selfish request!"

But before anything is rebuilt, there's still a massive cleanup that needs to be completed here.

"We will see," he said. "You have a blank [canvas] to paint on, and there's a lot of painting to do.

"You have to be careful, even in this conversation, of going like, 'How sad that was,' when really it's about, 'Yes, but now we need this.' In the end you go like, it happened. And what's really important is absorbing maybe how all these things happened, and can they be circumnavigated to be more safe in the future, and be more aware? Of course that's part of it. But the real, real essence is the future."

Fleetwood's ukelele is one of the few things that survived the fire, and he's hoping his dream survives as well.

MORRISON HOTEL GALLERY PARTNERS WITH MICK FLEETWOOD

On June 30th, Morrison Hotel Gallery is honored to be joining forces with this cultural icon for a gallery opening at Fleetwood’s General Store in Maui, Hawaii located at 744 Front Street, Lahaina, Hawaii. Fleetwood’s is a boutique that incorporates the culture and style of the Hawaiian Islands with a world traveler’s flair that only Mick Fleetwood can provide.

“Morrison Hotel Gallery is the real deal in fine art music photography,” says Fleetwood. “It’s a world I have lived and breathed for my whole life, and thus serves as a constant reminder of how lucky I am to be part of that historical musical journey!!”

The parties will toast their partnership with an exhibit from award-winning and culture-defining photographer—and MHG co-founder—Henry Diltz, whose catalog includes albums shots for the Doors, Crosby Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and hundreds of others.

“Mick Fleetwood represents the artistic and authentic history of music as a true purveyor of taste and culture,” says MHG co-founder Peter Blachley. “Morrison Hotel Gallery has also been striving for many years to present those same qualities. We are delighted to be part of Fleetwood’s General Store in Maui. It’s going to be a wonderful pairing of brands.”

Mick was actually on his way to Maui, not landing in Los Angeles as the article suggests.  And he's carrying a Ukulele not a guitar.

Going his own way! Legendary musician Mick Fleetwood opts for serious flower power as he lands in Los Angeles

He is one of the most successful singer/songwriters in the world, noted for his contribution to Fleetwood Mac's commercial success which first exploded in the 1970s.

But Mick Fleetwood was still channeling something of a flower-power vibe when he landed in Los Angeles airport on Friday.

The 66 year-old was clearly going his own way as he arrived in California, where he stood out from the crowd in a clash of colours.

The acclaimed musician - whose hits include Tusk, You Make Loving Fun and Go Your Own Way - looked like he was back on the east coast to write or record new music as he carried his guitar.

Wearing a bright yellow jacket with pale blue trousers, he accessorised with a pink and white floral scarf and a pair of tan boat shoes.

He also wore his hair in a ponytail, although much of it was covered by his purple-rimmed hat.

Clearly dressed to impress, he attracted many onlookers with his quirky attire as he walked through the airport's arrivals terminal.

But the attention will be welcome now that the British-born star is about to embark on a Fleetwood Mac reunion tour from September, which will see all five original back together on stage.

This will see them perform until 20 December, performing all of their favourite hits.

The Chain group - featuring John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks - have recently welcomed back Christine McVie.

After 15 years of living in the tranquil English countryside, the 70 year-old has made the decision to return to the band for a planned tour.

The British-American band were formed in 1967 in London. Their smash-hit album Rumours sold 40 million and topped the U.S. chart for seven months, but their stardom was blighted by cocaine-fuelled excess.

Video: Christine McVie Intro'd by Mick Fleetwood + "Get Like You Used To Be"

Here's a short clip of Mick Fleetwood introducing Christine McVie in Maui on Feb 13th + Christine singing the beginning of "Get Like You Used To Be" which she's probably not done live since I'm guessing the early 70's!  Thanks to Tom Clark for the video!  The full version of "Don't Stop" and "Get Like You Used To Be" at the bottom.

One for the history books! Ex Fleetwood Mac Member Christine McVie Performs Live - 1st Time in 15 Years!

Well this hasn't happened in oh... 15 YEARS!!

It was 15 years ago this month that Christine McVie last performed live professionally in front of an audience when she appeared with her band Fleetwood Mac and accepted the "Outstanding Contribution To Music" award at the 1998 Brit Awards in London and closed out the show with "Go Your Own Way" and "Don't Stop". (The band later appeared on a German TV program and performed Silver Springs, but we won't count that as they were lip-syncing). That was the last time we saw Christine on stage!

So fast forward 15 years later, while on vacation visiting with Mick on Maui, Christine joins Mick and his Blues Band at Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center along with Rick Vito, Steven Tyler and Mark Johnstone.  Over the last few days there has been some buzz that this was going to happen, but you never really know for sure it's going to happen until it happens, especially with anything Fleetwood Mac related.

I'm not sure what the set was, or what Christine played and sang, if it was just a few songs, one song or the full show... Obviously it was blues based.. But in any case it's so great to see her up there on stage... it's like the last 15 years have been wiped away.

Thanks to Suzanne Kayian and Lisa Homer for the pics!

Stevie Nicks Sighting... Maui Burger Joint!

Stevie Nicks was spotted on Maui yesterday at Cheesburger in Paradise in Lahaina, just down the street from where Mick Fleetwood's new restaurant will be situated.  That would be Karen to Stevie's left in white.

Mac members in the oddest places... First Lindsey's sitting on a woman's porch in Bend, Oregon... and now Stevie in pigtails in a burger joint in Hawaii...
