Fleetwood Mac Dig Deep: Lindsey Buckingham Breaks Down The Hits, Rarities and New Tunes

Rolling Stone Magazine - May 23, 2013
(with The Rolling Stones on the cover).

It's been exactly a decade since Fleetwood Mac released an album, but that hasn't stopped a new generation of fans from discovering the band. "We're ding the best business we've done in 20 years!" says guitarist Lindsey buckingham, a few hours before the Tulsa, Oklahoma, stop on the Mac's latest world tour.  "There's been a lot more young people in the crowd than three years ago.  Maybe it's a generational thing."  Buckingham called from his Tulsa hotel room to explain how they're choosing the set lists for this tour - mixing up the hits with plenty of deep cuts and tunes frm their new EP, Extended Play. - Andy Greene

Rolling Stone Spain | Rolling Stone Mexico March issues both Feat. Fleetwood Mac Multi-Page Spreads

Rolling Stone Spain - March, 2013 issue

Rolling Stone Mexico - March, 2013 issue

So far this year, we've seen Fleetwood Mac on the cover of the February, 2013 Germany issue of Rolling Stone (you can check it out here) with a multi-page spread inside.  The French edition of Rolling Stone in February covered the band across 11 pages (you can check it out here), now we have Mexico and Spain doing the same.  I think it's about time the U.S. version of the magazine stepped up the plate with some printed material. The english version of the above only ran on Rolling Stones website starting in December, 2012.  Check it out HERE, on Rolling Stone.  It's an interview by Andy Greene with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham - but done separately. It's pretty entertaining... Lindsey's kinda feisty!

Rolling Stone France Dedicate 11 Pages To Fleetwood Mac - Feb, 2013 issue

First Rolling Stone in Germany had that amazing cover and spread in their February issue.... Now Rolling Stone France are doing the same - except no Mac cover - but 11 pages!  That's huge!!  I think Rolling Stone in North America needs to step up to the plate, put them on the cover for the 5th time and celebrate this years 35th Anniversary release.  The Buckingham Nicks Q&A appears to be the same Andy Greene interview with Stevie and Lindsey that ran on-line in North America and can be read here RollingStone

Look for the February, 2013 issue in France or anywhere else where french language magazines are sold... It's on newsstands now. Bono on the cover.

Rolling Stone 2012 Tour Preview > 60% odds for Fleetwood Mac & Lindsey Buckingham gets his due

Tour Preview: Why 2012 Is Shaping Up to Be a Monster Year
Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Madonna and more are planning to hit the road

The ancient Mayans supposedly predicted that the world was going to end in 2012. That might explain why so many giant touring acts seem to be hitting the road next year. (They want to make their money while they still can.) Some acts like U2 and AC/DC may be taking the year off, but many of the other biggest names in the business seem to be gearing up for tours – even if they publicly refuse to admit it at this point. Here's a guide to the biggest (likely) tours of 2012.

Check out the Top 18 potential 2012 tours at Rollingstone.

FLEETWOOD MAC No. 17

Let's allow Lindsey Buckingham to comment on the possibility of Fleetwood Mac touring next year. "We're doing something for sure," the Fleetwood Mac guitarist told Rolling Stone in August. "I wouldn't be shocked if it was a tour and possibly an album. We'll have to wait and see. Nothing is on the books right now. With Fleetwood Mac, there's a lot of landmines out there politically and it's hard to get everybody on the same page at the same time – but I think this might be one of those years where everyone will want to do the same thing. Whatever that is."

Likelihood: 60 percent. This could easily move into 2013 – especially if they decide to cut an album first. Also, it was widely reported that they were going to tour stadiums with the Eagles in the summer of 2010, and that didn't happen.

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM
100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time

FINALLY! Lindsey gains some respect and makes the list.  He's at # 100!  Far to close to not being included at all... Not that these lists make any difference, but it's nice to be recognized.  He should at the very least be in the top # 50 if not top # 20.  But none the less he's included in with the all time greats... so cudos to Rollingstone for including him.  What's the criteria anyway?

During Fleetwood Mac's hitmaking era, Lindsey Buckingham transmuted the folk music of his banjo-playing youth into stadium rock: glistening harmonized leads, crisply snapping chords and frenetic arpeggiated breakdowns. "It's not acceptable classical technique," he has said. "You do what you can to get the sound you want."

Key Tracks: "Rhiannon," "Go Your Own Way"

Lindsey Buckingham Speaks To Rollingstone: New Album, 50 Date Tour, Buckingham Nicks + Fleetwood Mac

Lindsey Buckingham: Fleetwood Mac Will Return Next Year

"Working in a band is a lot like what I imagine making movies is like," says Lindsey Buckingham. "It's political and it takes a lot of verbalization to get from point A to point B. When I work alone, it's more like painting. You are one with the canvas and it's a subconscious, meditative process."

Recording his new disc Seeds We Sow (out September 6th on his own label) in his home studio, Buckingham really worked alone: producing, engineering, singing and playing nearly every instrument. "Most days I'd wake up, have my coffee, do my crossword puzzle and get there by 10:30 a.m.," he tells Rolling Stone. "And work through dinnertime. I didn't come up for air unless I had to."

Buckingham says that he didn't begin consciously writing the songs on Seeds We Sow with any sort of a theme in mind, but when he finished the disc he discovered a common thread running through his lyrics. "The songs are all about the accumulation of choices that we make everyday and the karmic part of that – which is where the title Seeds We Sow comes from," he says. "In my own life I've made a lot of choices that weren't always popular with people around me. Only in the last few years have I been able to look at them with the perspective of time." (The only non-original track on the album is the Rolling Stones' 1967 deep cut "She Smiled Sweetly.")

Buckingham is kicking off a 50-date theater tour this fall
mixing songs from the new disc, hits and lesser-known gems from his career. "People would probably run me out on a rail if I didn't do a few Fleetwood Mac songs," he says. "We'll do 'Big Love,' 'Never Going Back Again,' 'Tusk' and we gotta do 'Go Your Own Way.' That's about it though."

And Fleetwood Mac are likely to hit the road again next year. "We're doing something for sure," Buckingham says.

Buckingham Nicks
In addition to a tour, Fleetwood Mac fans have been long hoping that Lindsey and Stevie's 1973 LP Buckingham Nicks eventually will be released on CD. "We keep talking about that," says Buckingham. "It's been a victim of inertia. It's funny, I spent a lot of time with Stevie this year when she was finishing her album and we were getting along great. We have every intention of putting that album back out and possibly even doing something along with it, but I can't put any specifics on that."

Might they tour as a duo again? "I think that would be great!" says Buckingham. "I wouldn't do anything other than speculate at this point, but I think it would be tremendous fun and a different kind of thing for both of us. And it would certainly be something circular in that we'd be meeting up right where we started."

High Resolution artwork for "The Blackbird Diaries" has been released and includes spectacular photo of Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks in the studio... The artwork for Dave's Double Gatefold Double Vinyl Album of "The Blackbird Diaries" can be downloaded at Dave Stewarts Martini Moment website.   To check out the album sampler go here. And when you're done with that... check out the video for Dave and Colbie Caillat's "Bullet Proof Vest".  The track appears on the album... They sound great together.

David Wild's Twitter post below:
Wildaboutmusic: I can confirm the Stevie Nicks album preview is in the next Rolling Stone with this red hot "MAD MEN" cover!

Here's what David Wild Wrote in RollingStone:

STEVIE NICKS SOLO ALBUM DUE IN 2011.
"I haven't been this excited about anything I've done since [1981's] Bella Donna," says Stevie Nicks, who is working on her first solo LP since 2001. The album is a collaboration with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, who co-wrote and co-produced the disc (Glen Ballard also worked on the recored). "It's thrilling, because I've found a writing partner," says Nicks. "I never thought that would happen, because I've never been into sharing songs." The record, which Nicks hopes to put out next spring, doesn't have a title yet but is full of atmospheric, moody rock & roll reminiscent of her best solo work. "For What It's Worth" is a road song that Heartbreaker Mike Campbell contributed the music for, "In Your Dreams" is a supercatchy, uptempo cut, and "Italian Summer" is a grand, romantic ballad based on a trip Nicks recently took to Italy. "It's so powerful," she says. "That was a magical time that's become a magical song." She adds, "at a certain point, I'm going to get too old for this, but making this album really shows that I'm not done yet."

This Week in Rock History: Stevie Slammed at JFK Stadium Performance

WNEW | Where Rock Lives: This Week in Rock History: Steve and Stevie: "This week in 1978, JFK Stadium in Philadelphia was the site of one of those fabulous all-day all-star shows that studded '70s summers: Fleetwood Mac, the Steve Miller Band, former Mac member Bob Welch, and the Sanford-Townsend Band. It wasn't a particularly great day of music, however: Rolling Stone's review [link] of the show dismissed Welch and Sanford-Townsend in a single sentence and slammed Stevie Nicks, although it praised the rest of Fleetwood Mac, and Steve Miller was apparently pretty good."

STEVIE NICKS ON THE ULTIMATE SHOWMAN (MICHAEL JACKSON)

Michael Jackson Remembered:

I remember before [we performed at Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration], Michael sent somebody to find out if I had any foundation make-up he could borrow. I was using some light Chanel foundation at that time, and Michael sent back a note to say, thanks, but the foundation wasn't quite light enough for him. He meant that in show business, the stage is everywhere — it's when you leave the parking lot, when you go to the mall. It's about trying your best to be as perfect as possible. It's the reason Michael was like royalty. There's no other person like that, because the era of performers — the Frank Sinatras, the Elizabeth Taylors, the Sammy Davis Jr.s — is over. He was the last emperor.

Rolling Stone's special commemorative Michael Jackson issue featuring tributes from Quincy Jones, Slash, Brooke Shields and more is available now.

STEVIE IN UPCOMING SPECIAL ISSUE OF ROLLING STONE MAG

DAVID WILD SPEAKS TO STEVIE NICKS ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON... TO APPEAR IN UPCOMING SPECIAL ISSUE OF ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE.

"Midway through the film, Stevie Nicks -- a truly beautiful woman inside and out who I've loved since high school -- called to discuss Michael Jackson for a special issue of "Rolling Stone" that's coming right up. So I found myself sneaking out to lobby and recording our talk about Michael, music, fame and life as the absurly loud sounds of endless transformer battles bleed loudly through the theater walls."

David Wild is an Emmy-nominated television writer, a best-selling author, Contributing Editor for Rolling Stone, producer of The Chris Isaak Hour on the Bio Channel and wrote the foreword in the liner notes of Stevie's Crystal Visions Best Of CD/DVD release in 2007.
