REVIEWED: Lindsey Buckingham Live In Des Moines 9/1/12

Lindsey Buckingham Live At Hoyt Sherman Place
Des Moines, Iowa, September  1, 2012
by Todd Totale

Photos by Laura Stein - Gallery
“Look at all of those dudes up by the stage taking pictures of Lindsey’s guitar rack.” I pointed out to my wife as we made our way to our seats at Lindsey Buckingham’s solo performance in Des Moines last Saturday night. “That’s hilarious!” I added as we both sat down.

“Don’t laugh.” She replied. “You know you want to go up there and do the same thing.”

I paused for a moment before admitting, “I do want to go up there.”

PHOTOS: Stevie Nicks Performing at The Kennedy Center Washington DC at A Celebration of Science

STEVIE NICKS LIVE AT THE KENNEDY CENTER
Washington, DC - September 8, 2012

Looks like all the players are there tonight on stage at the Kennedy Center.

Joe Meehan: "Night 2: Stevie Nicks rocking the walls of the Kennedy Center"
Matt Cooperberg, MD: "Stevie Nicks still rocks! Fantastic finale."
Dr. Stephen Gruber: "Stevie Nicks - Awesome performance at #celebrationofscience."

Setlist and comments from someone attending the event: (Thanks to both below for the details)

"I was at both shows in DC. On Friday she sang "Soldiers Angel" at the Natioal Portrait Gallery and then on Saturday at The Kennedy Center she did "Landslide", "Rhiannon", "Edge Of Seventeen" and "Dreams". After Edge the DC political audience wents nuts, applauding like crazy. They had planned to sing John Lennon's "Imagine" at the end with Stevie, Babyface and Melissa Manchester, and during rehearsal it sounded wonderful. Stevie sang the first verse. But the show went very long, so they cut it at the last minute. The show was filmed, but they are not sure where it will air. Perhaps on PBS. Whoopi Goldberg did a great job hosting also."

Comment from someone attending Friday:

"I saw her on Friday and she spoke eloquently about her work with wounded soldiers, the progress that has been made with prosthetics but that there was still so much more needed to help those with physical and brain injuries. Audience included scientists and decision makers who could make a difference in this area. She ended with Soldiers Angel. Very, very moving."

Review: Lindsey Buckingham stands alone - Ottawa

The Ottawa Citizen Sept 8, 2012
Review: Edwards delivers big-hearted show; Buckingham stands alone

By Lynn Saxberg, Ottawa Citizen
Photo Gallery

Lindsey Buckingham is best known for his work in Fleetwood Mac, an entity he described as the “big machine” during his show Friday night.

However, the purpose of his current tour is to show off the “small machine” of his solo work. His most recent solo album, Seeds We Sow, came out last year.

“The big machine and the small machine have come to inform each other and find each other and balance each other, and would not exist without each other,” said the 62-year-old American musician, describing the solo experience as a “strange little experiment.”

For a solo performer, he had a huge sound, thanks to the pumped-up volume of his guitar, which at first threatened to drown out his voice. Once things were sorted, he sang well enough, but it was still his guitar work that dazzled, as he demonstrated his skill on a parade of six-stringed instruments, electric and acoustic. The concert drew from Buckingham’s solo repertoire, including songs like Cast Away Dreams and Bleed To Love Her, as well as the Mac catalogue. Next to the unfamiliar solo stuff, the Fleetwood Mac hits energized the crowd.

But that energy was built on Edwards’ performance earlier in the evening.

Lindsey Buckingham Dazzles With Intense Acoustic Show
by Brittany Leona

The CUPE-SCFP main stage of Ottawa's Folk Festival was graced tonight with one of rock's greatest legends: Lindsey Buckingham. One may be tempted to assume that based on his musical career spanning nearly four decades, having released over a dozen albums, being a talented composer, singer and producer, that he would have a larger than life stage presence and the typical rocker attitude to go with it – one would be wrong about the last item mentioned.

Photos & Mayhem in Ottawa for Lindsey Buckingham + Stevie Nicks in Washington, DC

Weird sort of circumstances... Both Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks are performing tonight in Nation Capitals.  Lindsey's in Ottawa which is the National Capital of Canada playing the Folk Festival and Stevie Nicks is performing tonight (and tomorrow) in the US Capital Washington, DC at the National Portrait Gallery for The Celebration of Science Dinner.  Stevie spoke of her Walter Reed visits and performed Soldiers Angel.

The Ottawa Folk Festival
Twitter reports live from the Folk Festival are saying that the power cut out during Lindsey's performance of "I'm So Afraid" not once, but a couple times... Mic's weren't working... Amps blew out...THAT can't be good!  So Lindsey moved on to "Go Your Own Way", finished the tune then left the stage ending his set as per usual.  When he came back he said 'They've assured me this won't happen again" he then moved onto the encores of "Trouble" and "Seeds We Sow" with no issue, then attempted "I'm So Afraid" at the very end once again when for the second time things blew up and the sound cut out.  And that's where the show ended... Too bad about I'm So Afraid, but in the end most of the show was performed which is great!

The weather in the area hasn't been the greatest this evening, the rain had apparently held off, but there was lightning overhead during his performance and maybe there was a lightning strike near by, maybe once, maybe twice... Or maybe the humidity was too much... Who knows.  In the end... From those who attended, it sounds like he put on an impressive performance!

Folk Fest: Big Love for solo act
BY DENIS ARMSTRONG,
OTTAWA SUN

If there ever was anyone who could hit all the right notes for the new Ottawa Folk Festival, Lindsey Buckingham would be at the top of the list.

Fleetwood Mac’s former lead guitarist, and arguably its most successful songwriter, played a solo acoustic show of Fleetwood Mac hits as well as his own songs, stripped down to the bare bones.

Now 62 but looking intense, Buckingham opened his show with Cast Away Dreams. Alas, despite the tune’s hypnotic rhythm, the sound was so loud and sharp, it hurt to listen. However, the problem was fixed by the time he played his second tune, a Fleetwood Mac cover called Bleed to Love Her.

He then described the show’s content, and his career thus far as the “big machine versus the little machine, that is, Fleetwood Mac and my solo career.”

In the late 1970s, Fleetwood Mac was one of the biggest-selling bands on the planet, and Buckingham was the author of their most popular hit songs Go Your Own Way, Never Going Back Again and Big Love.

Packing an impressive arsenal of exotic guitars, Buckingham played some of the most dazzling licks I’ve ever heard from a guitar, and his writing is forceful and unconventional. My only regret was having to leave early to meet an early deadline.

Here are a couple of Twitter pics from tonight.

Released One Year Ago Today: Lindsey Buckingham "Seeds We Sow"

One Year Ago Today:
September 6, 2011 Lindsey Buckingham released his 6th solo album "Seeds We Sow" and his 3rd since releasing "Under The Skin" in October, 2006.

"An exceptional set of great, ambient pop songs from one of Fleetwood Mac’s most influential musical architects." - A.C. FERRANTE

When the continuation of Fleetwood Mac's Unleashed Tour in 2010 fell through with Stevie deciding she wanted to focus on a new solo album (In Your Dreams), the remaining band members were left to their own devices to fill their down time. When Lindsey announced in late 2010 that he too had been working on a new album, it came as a nice surprise not only to fans but to Lindsey himself.  Lindsey didn't plan on putting out a new album.  Having set aside a three year window previously where he released two solo albums (2006's Under The Skin and 2008's Gift of Screws plus a Live DVD Live at The Bass Hall), he was ready to focus on Fleetwood Mac.  But during this down time it just sort of fell into place - and boy are we glad it did!  He's managed to put together a really great album where he handles pretty much everything on the album from the writing and producing to playing nearly every instrument himself.  Without a recording contract, having fulfilled his commitment to Warner Bros. he also took on the task of self-releasing the album - and thus "Seeds We Sow" was born on September 6, 2011.

The album debuted and peaked at #45 on Billboards Top 200 Albums Chart where it tied 1984's "Go Insane" chart position making it his third highest charting album after 1981's "Law and Order" which climbed to #9. Seeds also reached #6 on Billboards Top Rock Albums Chart and #5 on Billboards Top Independent Albums chart.  Internationally the album debuted and peaked at #28 in Norway, debuted and peaked at #92 in Canada, debuted and peaked at #95 in Ireland where it also debuted and peaked at #9 Irelands Top 20 Independent Album charts. In the UK the album debuted at #82 on the UK Top 100 Album Charts Sept 17, 2011 and at #12 on the Top 40 Independent Album Charts.

On The Album Charts
# 28 - Norway
# 45 - USA
# 82 - UK
# 92 - Canada
# 95 - Ireland

IT'S BEEN A WHIRLWIND YEAR!
New Album | New DVD | 100 Live Shows

A lot has happened in this one year since Lindsey released "Seeds We Sow".

- New Album Released - September, 2011
- 39 Live Shows - September 10th to November 14, 2011
- New DVD/CD Released - October, 2011
- 61 Live Shows - May 3rd to September 8, 2012

Shortly after the release of the new album, Lindsey embarked on a two month 39 city full band tour of the US and Canada from September 10th to November 14, 2011.  After the North American run of shows, Lindsey was scheduled to perform nine dates in the UK and Ireland in December, but because of a band member injury, the dates were cancelled and sadly never rescheduled.

In October, 2011 during the tour, Lindsey also released a live DVD/CD package titled "Songs From The Small Machine: Live in L.A." from a show previously filmed in Beverly Hills, CA in April, 2011.

From November, 2011 until May, 2012 - Lindsey was pretty much dormant until he kicked things back into gear May 3, 2012 setting off on a 61 date North American Solo Acoustic Tour that concludes with three performance Canada beginning tonight and ending at Casino Rama this Saturday, September 8th in Ontario.

With all the Fleetwood Mac band members now talking about reuniting for a tour in 2013, it looks like Lindsey will be taking a break until things pick back up in early 2013 when it's been reported that tour rehearsals for Fleetwood Mac begin in January.

Thanks for the great year Lindsey!
