Stevie Nicks Admits Undying Love for Lindsey Buckingham, Dedicates New Album to Fan Who Succumbed to Cancer

by Mike Doherty
Spinner
After Stevie Nicks released 'Trouble in Shangri-La' in 2001, she thought she'd never record another solo album again. The process was tiresome and besides, she still had her longtime band Fleetwood Mac to satisfy her musical creativity.

Now, 10 years later, she's back with 'In Your Dreams' -- a rich, dynamic album co-written and co-produced by Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart, and featuring Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood on drums and ex-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham on guitar and vocals. From a San Francisco hotel room, on a rare night off from her recent tour with Rod Stewart, Nicks told Spinner about gaining inspiration from a lost friend, how recording this album changed her life and why she and Lindsey are like Bella and Edward from 'Twilight.'

On your recent tour with Rod Stewart, was there a friendly rivalry between the two of you? Would you ever tell him before a show, "I'm going to go out and wipe the floor with you tonight?"

Oh no, you would never say something like that to Rod Stewart [laughs]. Even though he's only a few years older than me, he is from a generation before me. Rod Stewart was a big rock star before Lindsey [Buckingham] and I even moved to Los Angeles. He was one of my big inspirations: Rod Stewart, Led Zeppelin, Janis, Jimi ...

You and Lindsey got a record deal in 1972 as Buckingham Nicks. Would you have been signed in 2011?

The music business is in terrible shape right now because artists don't sell ten million albums anymore. [Labels are] not making all that money, so they can't have a whole slew of bands that they're helping and developing. Lindsey and I were really lucky. I was just a waitress for four years, and he wasn't [working]. It was okay because we worked on our music, we had a four-track Ampex tape recorder, and we were able to survive.

But I don't see how the kids can do it today. I feel sorry for them. I want it to happen, because in 20 years, I don't want everybody to be just listening to the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin; I want this generation to have their own rock stars that last. But it's going to be very hard for the kids that are popular right now to still be doing this when they're 40.

We're so used to hearing about how your albums have had difficult gestation periods, but you've said that making 'In Your Dreams' was great -- it must be a relief.
Well, this is how it should be. When you make records with Fleetwood Mac, they're difficult. That's not to say they're not amazing -- they obviously are, and that's why I am famous; every time I drive up to my gorgeous house, I go, "This is the house that Fleetwood Mac built." So did we argue? Yes. Did we have fights? Yes. But was the music that came out of it fantastic? Yes. However, it was difficult.

Even making my own records -- between 'Bella Donna' in 1981 and 'Shangri-La' in 2001 -- was difficult. [With this album], I have been reminded that you can make great music and have a good time doing it, and that you don't have to be heartbroken and freaking out. [You can] go back to your poetry from the last 30 years, and if you want those passionate, crazy moments, you can find them in your writing.

[Update] Stevie Nicks "Secret Love" On the AC Charts

It's hanging on... No. 21 for a second week, with a bullet on the AC Charts. Only 2 increases in play over the previous week... It's been bouncing between No. 21 and No. 22 for the last 4 weeks!  It looks like it's life over on the Triple A Charts is pretty much over... But when you think about it and look back at her previous singles Stevie hasn't had a song last this long on the charts in close to a decade!.. Plus Secret Love is still being played constantly and consistently at AC.

These chart standings are for Billboard Magazine issue May 7th.

The Heart and Soul Tour With Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart May Not Be Over!

Days after coming in off the road from his “Heart & Soul” tour with Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart was back in the studio, recording vocals for his forthcoming blues album with, as he calls him, “his former boss,” Jeff Beck.

In other news...

He and Nicks may also tour together again after their inaugural run of 18 shows. “We got off to a little bit of a shaky start because she’s extremely nervous, a real pro, doesn’t want any mistakes, but I’m just the opposite. I like mistakes in a show, that vulnerability, the element of risk,” Stewart says. “But she was wonderful to work with. She was so great, by the end of the tour, she’d bought all my children a piece of jewelry, the three girl singers in the band jewelry, she bought me a piece of jewelry and what did i buy her? A Jo Malone candle. I felt so cheap!” Given that Stewart has eight children, that’s a considerable amount of jewelry.

(Fan Reviews) Stevie Nicks "In Your Deams" "Ms. Stevie Nicks is back in peak form"

My Review:
by: John Seger

With "In your dreams," Ms. Stevie Nicks is back in peak form. Her voice sounds refreshingly vital and urgent. Every single song is amazing, and the theme of love is intertwined magically throughout. The new top 20 adult contemporary single, "Secret Love" opens the set with a very sweet and radio friendly hook. Then "For what it's worth" launches into a folk guitar driven ditty that is so Stevie. "Moonlight" reworks her demo, "Lady from the mountain," a fan fave, with a new chorus that sounds like two songs in one, yet it fits so snugly and perfectly. Dave Stewart is the perfect choice to produce this artfully stunning music. Dave "gets" Stevie, and he presents this music with just enough modern production to keep it sounding current, while never tampering with Stevie's classic rock sound. It's perfectly progressive without sounding trendy. And with each listen, this collection just becomes more and more addictive. "Wide Sargasso Sea, " based upon the classic novel by Jean Rhys begins softly and slowly, building into a smashing rocking and rolling frenzy complete with Nicks' trademark urgent wailing by the end of the song. Annabel Lee is epic, giving props to Edgar Allan Poe. "Soldiers Angel" is her love song to our wounded soldiers in the military. "New Orleans" dedicates healing, strength and love to that city that is still rebuilding from the hurricane disaster. "Ghosts are gone" is a flat out rocker that recalls classic Nicks. "Italian summer" is gorgeous, with it's violins, romantic vibes, and Stevie's seductive voice ending the song by holding a long final note that sounds simply gorgeous. This album is amazingly artistic, with Stevie Nicks in peak form. While the reviews say this is Stevie Nicks' best album since "Bella Donna," let me say "Trouble in Shangri la" was also revered as such. So, in closing, I will say this is Stevie Nicks at her best, ranking amongst her best material. Although 10 years was a very long time for fans to get a new solo set from Nicks, it was well worth waiting for. Let us hope we won't have to wait 10 more years for the next album. This proves Stevie Nicks is in no way done. She is back, in peak form, and has much more music to share with the world. Rock on Ancient Queen.

Thanks for sending this in John!
