NEW Interview: Nicks talks Glee, Night of 1000 Stevies, Her Gay Fans, Writing a Book & The Wiltern Show

Stevie Nicks talks Brittana, gay fans and "In Your Dreams"
by Karman Kregloe, Editor in Chief

AfterEllen.com was recently invited to participate in a group interview with Stevie Nicks, who has been on tour in support of In Your Dreams, her first album in a decade. Nicks spoke to a group of LGBT journalists (their questions are also included below) about her extensive songbook, the current tour, her gay fan base and, of course, Glee.

When it was my turn to ask a question, I naturally led with Brittana. As you can see by her answer to that question and the others pertaining to the show, Nicks is a hardcore fan who is invested in all of the character's storylines. In this engaging interview with six journalists who were all unabashed and longtime fans, Nicks talked about her musical career, her favorite song on the new CD and why she's considering writing a memoir.

On when she first noticed that she had a significant LGBT following:

I mean, I have a lot of gay friends. So that’s, you know, one side of the whole thing. But then the other side is the Night of 1000 Stevies. ... Somebody said did you know that there is this big like major party that goes on every year in New York that’s called the Night of 1000 Stevies? And I’m going, "What? What is that?" And so they explained it to me. And I’m thinking that’s pretty damn cool. And then it — that’s what? Twenty years ago? So that really was when I really realized that my music was really appealing to all my gay fans. And my goodness, this party has become historical, I think. And so, really, that was the beginning. And it was a long, long time ago. And who knew? I mean, I think when I was first told about it. I thought this would be something that would be a great thing that would happen maybe twice. And then it is still going on. So I’m thrilled.

On how she feels about her music reaching an entirely new audience of (very young) fans via Glee:

It's pretty thrilling. First of all, I had been watching Glee from the very beginning. And, like we all do, we have our favorite TV shows that we totally look forward to. And if we can’t watch them that night we make sure we tape them.

And so I have been watching Glee since it first came on. So when I found out that they were doing "Landslide," and that Gwyneth Paltrow was going to come in and play her Holly Holiday character and she was going to sing it and Santana and Brittany were going to sing with her, I was just so knocked out. And I said, "Well, can I go?"

I am in LA and people said, "Well, sure you can." So I went. And I hung out there for six or seven hours and really spent the whole day with them and sat with the writers and watched them film it over and over again from every different angle and was so, first of all, just thrilled to be there, and thrilled that I got to interact with all the kids whom I can hardly call by their real names, because to me they have become the characters.

And to just totally sit there and enjoy that; and then the greatest thing was when it was over, when they were done, they all came and like grouped around me. And Lea Michelle, Rachel, said, "You know what? Nobody has ever done this. I mean how many great old songs from the ‘70s and the ‘80s and the ‘60s have we done? And nobody, none of those artists have ever called us or come down or sent us some roses or anything, or taken any kind of notice whatsoever that we did like an amazing version of I don’t know, let’s just pick one, 'Jessie’s Girl.' That nobody ever, ever acknowledged that." And I thought that was so sad.

So, of course I sent them huge flowers. And then when they did the Rumours thing — what a favor they did for me by putting that out the same day that my record came out. I thought that was like so lovely of them. So I sent more flowers to my Glee children. And I said, "A day without Glee is like a day without sunshine." And so I have a real relationship with them now. And I really treasure it.

On whether she'd like to see Brittany and Santana end up together on Glee:

As the "always about love" person, I want — in the story, of course — I want them to be happy whoever they are with. So if that is going to be Santana and Brittany, then I am thrilled. If that is going to be Artie and Brittany, then I am thrilled. It’s like I don’t really have an opinion because I am looking at it as a real story.

And in real stories things work out because of what is in the hearts of man, you know? I don’t look at it as I want it to work out because it is a gay relationship on TV. Or I want it to work out because it’s a relationship with a guy in a wheelchair. I want it to work out because it is right for the characters.

I want the storyline — I want them to all be happy. So I don’t have a preference of how I want it to end up. And also I don’t really — I always want to be surprised, because I am a writer. So coming from a writer’s point of view I want to never know what is going to happen.

On what she thinks of the "new pop divas" Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Pink:

VIDEO: Stevie Nicks In Your Dreams Tour Campaign #StevieNicksIYDTOUR with @davestewart

And it all comes down to you!...
Stevie's new album In Your Dreams is out now in many countries around the world and has been for about a month.  The album is being loved and heralded by not only the fans, but by critics and reviewers (Album Reviews) as her best since the early 80's.  In Your Dreams is about to drop in the UK in just a few short weeks (June 27th) to great anticipation by the UK fans.  With the Summer touring season virtually upon us where do we find ourselves?  We find ourselves looking at a blank slate in terms of scheduled live solo dates touring behind this really amazing new album... Aside from the one show in the UK June 26th at the Hard Rock Calling Festival and the previously reported tour in Australia this November there isn't anything lined up, that we know of, for North America this summer/fall.  Yes, Stevie wasn't completely absent from the road this year.  She toured with Rod Stewart in March/April covering 18 major markets in the US/Canada where she included one new song in that set from the new album "Secret Love".  That was great for what it was, which was introducing her music to pretty much an audience that wasn't necessarily there to see her - but to see Rod.

The real issue is that The Wiltern Birthday Bash show May 26th proved that adding an astounding amount of new music to the set (8 new songs from the new album) can be done and should be done.  What an exciting night it was to be in that audience... I can't even tell you!  Not only did it prove that the new songs can be played alongside the older solo and Fleetwood Mac favourites, it can be done to great success.  The balance of The Wiltern show between older material and new material was perfect!! The audience ate it up... I know, I was there... Granted it was an Album Release Concert so you would expect a great deal of the album to be previewed but the music sounded so good that night.  Stevie's band was tight,  they played the new music with such ease it looked as if they had been playing this music for years... Stevie, Sharon and Lori were on their game that night looking and sounding phenomenal.  Fans all over should have the opportunity to experience something similar - they deserve it and the new music deserves to be heard live!!  With the exception of one song in the set "Soldiers Angel" everything played that night is completely road worthy.  With "Soldiers Angel" where Lindsey sings and plays back up, I don't think you can touch that song unless he's going to be there.  Just my opinion.

Dave Stewart the album co-producer, co-writer, duet partner, videographer on a couple of tracks from the album was at The Wiltern May 26th and added a great deal to the overall show... He's set to tour with Stevie in Australia come November and I believe he'd totally be on board if a trek across North America were put into place... Dave included would just be an added bonus if it happened and would tie everything the two of them have worked on over the last year and a half together nicely...

There has been talk of something in the works for Stevie touring in North America sometime in August/September - but nothing has been announced and we are already into June.  If it's going to happen, it needs to happen pretty quick!

‘Dream’ comes true for Stevie Nicks

“In Your Dreams” (Reprise) ★★★/4
Worcester Telegram
by Craig S. Semon

For those of you who think it’s time for Stevie Nicks to stand back, stand, back from the studio, “In Your Dreams” shows the 62-year-old, rock ’n’ roll enchantress still has plenty of tricks up her leather-and-lace sleeves and the power to conjure up enchanting spells in her songs.

With her engaging rasp and gypsy-ccentric take on life, Nicks is still the encompassing free-spirit and engaging earth mother who’s one with the cosmos but is always at odds with affairs (and I mean affairs) of the heart.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer calls her latest opus her own little “Rumours.” Well, it isn’t quite that good, but “In Your Dreams” is easily her best disc since 1981’s “Bella Donna.”

Nicks asks the musical question “Must secret loves secretly die?” on the aptly titled leadoff track and first single, “Secret Love.” This Fleetwood Mac-like composition was written during the “Rumours” session and sounds like a lost B-side from a time when fleeting, forbidden relationships were all the rage (especially if you were in Fleetwood Mac). Nicks’ bewitching vocals hover above a bubbling caldron of jangly guitars and gurgling keyboards. Nicks belts, “I am not asking forever from you/I’m just asking to be held for awhile/In a timeless search/From a love that might work/We’re already payin’ the price.” Nicks might have to pay the price for her indiscretions but her fans are reaping the benefits.

Whether it’s instinctually and/or unconsciously, Nicks is a believer of forbidden, outrageous love affairs, as evidenced with “For What It’s Worth.” In the combination mantra/confession of guilt, Nicks declares, “I got to sing. I got to dance. I got to be a part of a great romance.” Nicks’ voice sounds lively and youthful and her teary-eyed ruminations sound vibrant and timeless. With some sparkling acoustic and lap steel guitar supplied by Tom Petty’s ax-grinding Heartbreaker Mike Campbell, Nicks’ world-weary wisdom of being trapped in a relationship that was doomed from the start is passionate, poignant and poetic.

Despite being old enough to retire, Nicks sounds like she’s on the edge of 17 on the title track, “In Your Dreams.” Accompanied by a lively, countrified-rock arrangement, Nicks sums up her private and professional persona in the simple lines, “I’m just a dreamer/A storyteller/It’s all about you.” And, whether it’s her faithful listener or lover at the moment she is singing to, Nicks proves she is eager to please.

When a fling takes a turn for the worse on “Wide Sargasso Sea,” Nicks does what any level-headed, jilted lover would do. Burn the house down to the ground with herself inside to give her ex something to remember her by. While the song is over the top, Nicks keeps the song grounded with her flowing, storytelling lyrics and her undying commitment to the material.

“New Orleans,” a tame (and often lame) travelogue set to music, often sounds like a combination of Nicks’ shopping and things-to-do lists. Nicks bemoans, “I wanna get back to New Orleans/I wanna sing out/In the streets of the French Quarter/I wanna dress up/I wanna wear beads/I wanna wear feathers and lace/I wanna brush by Anne Rice/Go down Bourbon Street.” I wanna. I wanna. I wanna. Even a “Girls Gone Wild” TV promo has more decorum and drama.

I don’t know what’s sadder, Nicks confessing that she’s a fan of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” film or the fact that she was inspired to write a song about it. On the bubblegum Goth ballad “Moonlight (A Vampire’s Dream),” Nicks sings about the love between a sullen, social outcast and her brooding, blood-sucking, pretty-boy boyfriend. Despite its schoolgirl banalities, Nicks sinks her teeth in the anemic goo with the fervor of a teen-wolf on a feeding frenzy. In the end, Team Edward will swoon in delight while anyone who is old enough to drink will want to drive a stake through their heart.

“Soldier’s Angel” is a rare feat. It’s a deeply moving and heartfelt tribute to our wounded and lost soldiers that never becomes preachy, schmaltzy or too sentimental. Seeing through the eyes of a soldier’s mother, widow, nurse and the soldier themselves, Nicks gives their hard-to-convey thoughts an urgency and an immediacy that is taut, emotional and gripping. In one of the song’s most heartfelt and poignant verses, Nicks muses, “I’m a soldier in their army/They are the soldiers of my heart/I try to make them smile again/though it tears me apart/Their bravery leaves me spellbound/I try to be a small part/Of bringing them back again/They are the soldiers of my heart.” Made up of goofy, lovey-dovey couplets the queasy duet, “Cheaper Than Free” has Nicks and the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart clumsily chime in unison, “What’s faster than a fast car/A beating heart/What’s deeper than a deep well/The love in which I fell/More important than freedom/Being needed/More exciting than high fashion/High passion.” I have one for you. What’s cheesier than a jar of Cheez Whiz? This song.

While “Cheaper Than Free” is a colossal clunker, it doesn’t take away from the fact that “In Your Dreams” is often a success.
