Review: Lindsey Buckingham Live in Charlotte "his fingers are like some kind of tap-dancing spider"

Lindsey Buckingham, The Neighborhood Theatre, July 31, 2012

Review By Eric
Standing On The Shoulders of Giant Midgets

This is the thing you need to know if Lindsey Buckingham is coming to a stage in your area, whether he's coming as the small machine (what he calls his solo stuff these days) or the big machine (the Mac): that Lindsey Buckingham is one of the best guitarists you will ever see in your life. Regardless of whether you like any of his material with or without the band; this is a separate issue, and I couldn't give a damn whether you care for Fleetwood Mac or loathe them, or think you loathe them because there was a Christine McVie song that was sweet the first two times you heard it and the sense of drowning in maple syrup the subsequent hundred-and-fifteen. You will see very few guitar players better than Lindsey Buckingham. He is almost certainly one of the ten best players you will ever see in your life, should you be so lucky. Let me add that I only qualify this as much as I do because there's some slim chance you work at a retirement home for elderly blues musicians or live in some mythical Appalachian valley where every adult male is a blind bluegrass picker with a soul overbrimming with Man's ancient despair boiling up from a bottomless depth. It's just possible you were a roadie for The Yardbirds or something ridiculous like that, and so Lindsey Buckingham manages to tag in as the eleventh-best guitar player you could ever see. Fair enough. But he's good. He's goddamn good.

And when you go, if you go, watch those hands of his. Dammit, watch those hands.

Review: Lindsey Buckingham, Neighborhood Theatre, 7/31/2012

Lindsey Buckingham only needed his voice and a guitar to connect with each person at the Neighborhood Theatre on Tuesday night. The large theater setting felt more like a coffeehouse as the Fleetwood Mac singer/guitarist hypnotized the packed venue with a 13-song set spotlighting his vocal and finger-picking abilities.

Dressed in jeans, black shirt and a jacket, the gray-haired Buckingham hit the stage and opened with "Cast Away Dreams" from his solo album, Under the Skin.

Receiving a brief standing ovation after the opening song, Buckingham smiled and said thank you before grabbing a new guitar and starting the next song. It was a pattern repeated often in the night as Buckingham and crowd alike seemed to enjoy every moment of the performance.

There were no requests taken, no changing of the setlist and no drama in the performance — he simply stood in the spotlight and showed his talents as a musician, singer and songwriter.

Buckingham offered a few brief stories between songs — of joining Fleetwood Mac, of being a part of a "big machine" vs. the current tour's "small machine" (he's shared the same stories at each tour stop) — but the music took center stage for the hour-and-15-minute set featuring solo material as well as a few Fleetwood Mac favorites.
On "Never Going Back Again," Buckingham's vocals went from whisper to anguished cries as he displayed his complete vocal range in a matter of minutes. He mesmerized the crowd with the finger picking display of "Stephanie," and inspired a singalong with set closer "Go Your Own Way." The emotion and dexterity that poured out during "Big Love" were a stunning reminder of Buckingham's talent and his captivating abilities.

The 62-year-old, whose songs helped propel Fleetwood Mac to stardom in the 1970s and '80s, hasn't missed a step over the years and while his voice and musicianship may be more seasoned, his strength in each hasn't wavered. There may be a lack of spontaneity in his solo performances, but Buckingham makes up for it by doing what he does best and doing it really well.

Lindsey Buckingham: Driving musical force behind real-life soap opera that was Fleetwood Mac

The best rock picks
Given the circumstances of his defining era – as driving musical force behind the real-life soap opera that was Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1970s – you might not expect Lindsey Buckingham to age well. And yet he has. Now 62, he has maintained an idiosyncratic pop sense and guitar style still capable of surprises, as shown by the elegantly atmospheric trance-pop on last year’s “Seeds We Sow.” Thursday brings him to the homey confines of the 355-seat Carrboro ArtsCenter, an unusual opportunity to see a performer of his stature in a small venue. Showtime is 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $46-$54; or (gulp) $250, which includes a post-show meet-and-greet with Buckingham. See artscenterlive.org for details.

Buckingham plays Capitol Theatre
Fleetwood Mac’s veteran guitarist is touring in support of ‘Seeds We Sow’

CLEARWATER – Touring in support of his sixth solo album, Lindsey Buckingham takes the stage Monday, Aug. 6, 8 p.m., at Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St. Tickets start at $59. Call 791-7400.  The legendary guitarist, singer/songwriter, Grammy winner, producer and Rock And Roll Hall of Fame member released “Seeds We Sow” in September 2011.

Lindsey Buckingham Live in Charlotte, NC Tonight!
It must be a bitch being Fleetwood Mac svengali Lindsey Buckingham. Like his idol and fellow pop perfectionist Brian Wilson, he must live up to his musical legacy. In Buckingham’s case, he domineeringly directed the Mighty Mac to towering commercial and creative success. At the same time, Buckingham must live down his personal legend — the obsessive coke-blown genius and abusive demon lover to Stevie Nick’s gossamer faerie queen. The evidence suggests the two cannot be separated. After all, Buckingham’s fidgety, Peruvian-powdered fingerprints are all over Mac’s diffuse and difficult masterpiece Tusk. The guitarist seems to have accepted this. He’s on board for Mac’s 2013 tour, while solo he’s mellowed and matured, reflecting a man at peace with his place in the pop firmament. True, his simple, emotionally resonant lyrics have grown more opaque and self-consciously poetic, but his inventively arranged pop 'n’ roll and baroque folk still engage while getting under the skin. It’s the mark of a master that he makes it all look easy.

Veteran rockers Stewart, Nicks each have strengths
By Piet Levy of the Journal Sentinel

Seeing Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks singing together has arguably been one of the stronger selling points of the accomplished veterans' joint 2-year-old Heart and Soul Tour, which made a stop at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Monday.

But as has been the case on recent dates, the duets didn't happen.

Perhaps their hearts and souls weren't in it. And perhaps it was for the best, given the bad reviews their joint performances have received.

So instead of Stewart warbling his way through "Leather and Lace," Nicks brought out vocal coach Steve Real. Like most of the evening, the performance was affectionate and comforting.
