SAVE THE DATE: Sound City Doc Australian TV Premiere Feat. Fleetwood Mac September 12 - 9pm MAX TV

Dave Grohl's critically-acclaimed documentary to premiere on MAX Thursday September 12 at 9pm AEST

Rock icon, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) makes his directorial debut in the feature length documentary, Sound City. His homage to the iconic LA recording studio, Grohl once described the star-studded film as his "most important work". The untold story of American rock, this journey through an integral part of music history will premiere on MAX Thursday September 12 at 9pm.

For over four decades, Sound City recording studios became the birthplace for some of the world's most cherished music. From Neil Young's After The Goldrush and Fleetwood Mac's eponymous album, through to Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes, Nirvana's Nevermind, Rage Against the Machine's self-titled release and Johnny Cash's Unchained to name just a few.

Sound City is an insightful journey through time, revealing the story of real rock 'n' roll history and celebrating the human element of music. The film examines the legacy of the now-defunct Sound City studios and its legendary, custom-built Neve 8028 recording console that was involved in the making of so many classic albums.

Through interviews with legendary musicians and producers (including Neil Young, Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Rick Rubin, Lars Ulrich, Mick Fleetwood and Josh Homme), Sound City sets out to uncover and define the intangible magic within those wires and walls that was responsible for such an incredible history of contemporary music.

Along the way we learn how Mick Fleetwood met Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham at the studios, leading to them joining Fleetwood Mac. We find out why musicians and producers such as Butch Vig, Frank Black, Trent Reznor and Lars Ulrich all chose to work in an analogue environment at Sound City over other, more state of the art studios. Throughout the documentary we also track the growth of digital music and the inevitable death of analogue recording which changed the industry and Sound City forever.

Critic's pick: Fleetwood Mac, 'Then Play On'

By Walter Tunis — Contributing Music Writer
Kentucky.com

The newest edition of Then Play On, the definitive studio recording by the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac, ends with a subtle guitar instrumental titled World in Harmony.

The music blooms from sparse, autumnal ambience into a summery, almost country-esque serenade. It's a quiet study in harmony and conflict, opposites that always seem to surface when Fleetwood Mac is at its best.

Named after the oft-quoted opening to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night ("If music be the food of love, play on"), the album is a masterwork that faded from view as the band shot to pop stardom in the mid-'70s with the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. But Then Play On, Fleetwood Mac's third studio work, takes us back to 1969 and remains a portrait of lost rock 'n' roll innocence. It was the first record to feature co-guitarist Danny Kirwan and the last to include band founder Green. The band's third guitarist, Jeremy Spencer, is curiously absent from the recording.

Stevie Nicks: The Original Rebel 'My whole life is a rebellious moment,' she laughs.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ORIGINAL REBEL

Elle-UK is on newsstands now.

Fashion is having a rebel moment. But long before maverick icons Grace Jones in black rubber, Courtney Love in ripped tights and lace, and Chrissie Hynde who cut her own hair and never removed her leather jacket, there was Stevie Nicks.  ‘My whole life is a rebellious moment,’ she laughs – a long, throaty, mocking-the-world-laugh.

The 'US' Generation Documentary

Well this should excite the masses!  Fleetwood Mac are part of an upcoming documentary on The 1982 US Festival.  Check out the official trailer below... Fleetwood Mac come in at about the 2 minute mark where they are shown on stage, in crisp clear footage, singing a bit of Go Your Own Way... They are also on stage introducing Apple co-founder and US Festival visionary, Steve Wozniak.

This looks so cool, I can't wait to see it!  The documentary will in some format be released to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the Festival this Labour Day September 3, 2012.  Originally scheduled for a Labour Day release the documentary has been pushed back a bit as they are awaiting final interview approvals from key artists that performed.

Review of Fleetwood Mac – Then Play On (Warner Music Canada)

by Ken Kelley

They might be arguably best known for Rumours but the fact of the matter is, before they found chart fame, Fleetwood Mac were a killer blues band. The guitar work on the instrumental track Fighting For Madge features guitarists Peter Green and Danny Kirwan trading off jaw dropping blues licks while the revered Oh Well – Pt. 1 can easily rival Led Zeppelin for heaviness and groove. Boasting four bonus tracks and the original U.K. release running order, this is a fascinating look back on one of music’s biggest acts.
